  1. Hi All:

I just picked up the Philips DVP 642 DivX Dvd Player as it was highly recommended by my friends and on this website. I was very impressed with how it read everything i fed it compared to my panasonic but here is where my problems started. I have yet to finish a movie without it stuttering and stopping on me. I have upgraded the firmware on it and everything and have checked out this board to find a solution but i am stumped. Could it be I just have a faulty player? I still have 10 days to exchange or return so i am curious if i should try to exchange or just flat out return if this is a problem that will continue to happen.

If anyone has any input or can help me that would be awesome! Thanks so much!

  2. Your player could be faulty, but be aware this player is very sensitive to CD-R quality. If your movies are on CD-R, try switching brands (Taiyo Yuden?). If that doesn't work, I'd exchange it. This unit just doesn't like CD-R's that much and has trouble reading them. Store bought DVD's are fine, DVDR is somewhere in the middle.

  3. i use memorex cd-rs, and ive never had that problem. make sure you have some high quality brands and everything should be ok. and make sure you go to audio settings and change it to PCM only, no movie has d-synced audio since i changed that. i think all turned DRC on

  4. Hi All!

Thanks for the responses but my problem hasnt been audio de syncing or anything of that nature. It just seems to lock up after playing for a while. I use Memorex DVD+R 8x or 4 x and i use Maxell 4x DVD+R discs. My panasonic can read most of them and never stutters. Sometimes on my philips it will play all the way through i just dont want to have to take that chance. any other suggestions?

    Thanks

I have two of the Philips dvp642 and no problems here. They both have played all of my avi videos (divx and xvid). I'm using Memorex -/+ 4x dvd media to burn dvd's. Fuji and some bulk? cd-r"s to burn my avi's. You stated your player is under warranty. I would try an exchange.

Do you have anything sitting on top of it? Check the manual, it gives instructions on how much clearance to allow on top and sides. They aren't kidding either... this player gets HOT and chipsets can easily overheat and lock up.

I've got mine sitting on top of a VCR, which is only 2/3 the width of the Philips. Looks weird, but keeps it from overheating.

  7. That's weird, My 642 has a full size DVD recorder sitting on top of it and works fine, but now I may move it.
    Thanks.

  8. Hey!

I dont have anything sitting on top of my player. I have it sitting on top of my television though if that matters. It seems to have enough air venting to it from where it is. Any other cracks at it?
