  1. ok, this problem i am having will take a while to explain so please bear with me.

I downloaded the klite codec pack 2.34, in stalled it flawlessly. Everything was fine. I read a post about a specific movie I had, that said that it needed a ffdshow codec. I downloaded the EAD filter pack, and installed ONLY the ffdshow codec. Everything worked perfect. I next came across another video file that need ed an updated codec pack. I upgraded to klite codec pack 2.36. I uninstalled 2.34, and installed 2.36. the vid file that needed fddshow was not working again, so i reinstalled ffdshow codec, in the middle of installation I got the error msg cannot open c:/program files/fddshow/fddshow.ax". I then skipped the file thinking I already had it installed, not none of my video files worked. I have not rebooted either, if that is indeed a factor.

Any insight as to why i got that fddshow.ax message, and how to fix it so that everything will work properly would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Zero

First, as you have found out, NEVER install a whole codec pack. You are almost guaranteed to have conflicts and problems. Only install the codecs you need as you need them. Unfortunately the codec packs don't always completely uninstall.

You can use Codec Sniper and try to remove the offenders, but it's not easy. Try VLC Media Player in the interim until you can straighten everything out.

You can try to uninstall FFDshow, and then reinstall it, but the other codecs have probably messed things up.

  3. Like redwuz just pointed out, NEVER EVER install codec pack. Nimo, Klite, whatever. Install only codecs you need. I used to have dozens of codecs installed on my computer. Now I have only XVid + ffdshow, DivX5, and Huffy installed. They can handle everything out there. If they were not encoded in these formats, they probably ain't worth watching.
