Has anyone heard or read anything about this? I heard that they might lower the price closer to Christmas is this true? Thanks

I seriously doubt it.
Reports I've read indicate that they have no incentive to lower prices. Nintendo and Microsoft will likely have problems getting enough of their consoles on the shelves, so Sony can sell their console at its current price because, in many cases, it will be the only one readily available.
Perhaps Microsoft and/or Nintendo have surpassed manufacturing predictions. Playstation 2 prices will drop only if one or both of Sony's competitors have a substantial number of units available at retail. -
Either that or when all the hype around the new consoles dies out. Remember that with increased demand comes increased prices. As long as it sells well it won't come down, at least now that it is out you won''t have to worry about paying more that it's worth.
Personally I'd like to get my hands on an X-Box. I've played on pretty much every console out there so I'd like to see what Microsoft has to offer. -
im going to get he Xbox this holiday so and i want to see which is better my PS2 or my up comeing Xbox i cant wiat....and about the price i dont think its not going to go down untill next years holidays sooo that going to take along time.....

I just read an article on this exact thing the other day. The answer is no, the price will not drop for several years. The problem is that when a new system comes out, for the most part the company is losing money on sales. the X-Box sells for $300, but it actually costs more than that to make it. The profits come in by way of the software. Microsoft will charge companies to port their game to their system, and make profits off of the games. This profit will be applied to the loss on the consoles. So when the X-Box gets to the point where the focus is away from getting people to buy systems and puts it on software the real money is being made. Since PS2 is just now getting to the point of breaking even and the focus is on games there is no incentive to drop the price yet, they only lose more money in the long run. Besides, PS2 has a large fan base from last season and a track record of a year when it comes to playability and some great second generation games.

No, no PS2 is not coming down for a long time...but this brings up a question that I have...how many x-boxes has Microsoft sold? I went to Wal-Mart the other day and they had like 10 behind the counter(and some on the shelves as I saw later)...I asked if they were on layaway and the sales guy said "No, go ahead and grab one"...so has anybody heard of any numbers on sales? I remember when PS2 came out they weren't on shelves for MONTHS around here...I knew M$ was going to take a hit with the XBox...but how big a hit will it be?

The PS2 will drop in price within 6-8 months. As games are released for the gamecube and xbox, and the supply of those consoles increases, Sony will find themselves pressured to lower prices. Like all other consoles before these, manufacturers will only lower prices when forced to.
Last year there was an artificial shortage of PS2's that drove up the buzz on the unit. Now they are plentiful. Best Buy, Frys, etc. all have pallets of PS2's on the showroom floors. Any less-than-expected sales for this holiday season, and we could see price drops even sooner than 6-8 months.
Claiming that companies lose money on console sales is a widely held misconception. The expenses of R&D and advertising are factored in, and companies use certain accounting practices to show that they are "losing money"...
it's all in how the amortize these costs.
...not to mention that this is a good marketing ploy. People think that they are getting a bargain.

You all missed the better system out there better than Xbox and PS2, the dreamcast, got mine for $39 new, dead or alive 2 for $10 and it blows away the xbox version of the same game on a 36 inch tv, plus it will play MP3's, AVI's, MPEG-1, .dat files of any resolution plus JPEG photo's, emulate the sega master system, genesis, Mame 32, some playstation1 games, NES, SNES, all with no mod chip just use the free Utopia boot disc from the net, MPEG-1 Jurrasic park 3 looked fine on it, keep in mind its not the VCD picture you get from a DVD player but passable. Since it uses a windows CE operating system don't be surprise if someone gets a Xbox game emulated on it next. For $300 I can own the Dreamcast and almost every game out there for it. Or just wait 18-24 months and get the Xbox for $99 when it can't compete anymore with the PS2 and Gamecube.

Microsoft is losing about $100 on each XBox it sells, as did the PS2 when it first came out. The games is where the money is and the PS2 has a crap load of games, not to mention it is backward compatible with the old PS games. I have a PS2 right now, and I probably will get a XBox but not until there is a wider selection of games to choose from. As for the previous post on the Dreamcast. Sega is in the process of completely removing itself from the console market and is only going to design games for the competition that booted them out of the console business. I personally am waiting for Final Fantasy X to be released on the 26th this month for PS2.
