I tried to transfer a VHS movie to DVD+R on the Liteon 5005 recorder but the recorder said "protected content". I think it must be the Macrovision on the tape. Is there a way to disable it so I can record. The 5005 has the latest FW (ver. 1098) I downloaded from Liteon website. Thanks for any pointer.

More info: I tried a method someone here suggested on a different post by unplugging the video signal going into 5005 then started the recording on the 5005 for a 5 sec then paused the recording. Then I plugged in the video signal into the 5005 and un-paused it to start recording again. The 5005 screen would show "protected content" and actually stopped the recording. So this method didn't work.

You can disable macrovision and get 3 hr record mode on the 5005. Just run this app http://ilohacker.tripod.com/ on the firmware brfore you burn it to cd then flash the 5005 again. With 1098 already on the unit you may need to be in dvd playback mode when you put in the hacked firmware disk you burned.

Does anyone know if that hack for Ilo and Lite on 5005 will work for the Lite on 5007? I haven't hacked my Lite on like it said not to but I sure would like to get the 3 hour mode to show up. I downloaded a hack for the 5001 unit that is suppose to make the Lite on 5001 Mac free and 3 hours. I also read that the 5007 is just the 5001 with a TV Guide added to it. I don't know if I should try to install the old hack that I found for the 5001 or this new hack linked on this page for the Ilo and 5005 unit? Will the hack on this unit work on all Lite on units like the 5007? I would HATE to ruin the unit so soon after I decided to keep it by choosing the wrong hack if I decide to try one.

Download the Smart Firmware hacker and run it on the 5007 firmware. It will tell you if it worked or not. It should work on most ILO/LiteOn firmware. You can get it at my ILO firmware download page.

Well, I downloaded the Guitarman application and found my firmware on the computer. It showed that it found the Macrovision, 3 hour mode and region free parts of the firmware. Just as the picture on the website shown. I burnt a disk and put it in the machine and it wants to update. I just couldn't pull the trigger yet. For some reason I just don't have the guts right now. I will when there is something I want to tape that's over 2 hours long and I want to use the 3 hour mode; but so far it looks like what the screenshot shows.
I will say this, if/when I try the hack and if it works out o.k. it is without a doubt the easiest way to do a Lite On hack that I've seen. 3 things at once! I sure hope that this application and people will continue with this as more firmware update and new things are done. For example if they open the LSI chipset up to playback Divx.
I sure wish it was this easy to back up a Tivo hard drive image. I wish to to that too but it sounds HARD. -
I ran the ILO Hacker utility on LiteOn firmware rev. 1098. Unfortunately I accidentally updated my 5005 using the unhacked version of 1098. Now it won't attempt to run the hacked version. It won't attempt to run the unmodified version the second time either. It both cases, it just says "Data Disc" and does nothing more. Is there anyway I can do a firmware rollback or something else that will allow the hacked version to load and run?

davien316,
Yes. It will disable the ability for the 5007 to sense the MV signal and will allow you to connect a VCR or DVD player to the inputs and backup a tape or DVD. -
