here it is--how many megabytes of mpeg1 can i expect to get on a typical vcd?

About 740mb on a 650mb CD. That's about 74 minutes of standard VCD.

For a standard VCD 1min=10MB. You can put 74min on a 74min CDR (ie. 740MB) and 80min on an 80min CDR (ie. 800MB). You can also d/load a bitrate calculator (look under tools on the left) figure an exact bitrate/size ratio. You'll need to encode with either CBR or 2pass VBR for the formula to work thou.
