Hi there i have just bought a portable region free DVD Movie player which allows you to play DVD and MPEG4 Movies(Divx).
I was wondering i have some avi films and xvids which i want to play in the player.
Do i have to convert these films to Divx and if so what's the best and easiest software to use.

Why not just copy a few on to CDs and try them ?

My portable dvd/divx player specification is as follows:
The unit can support MPEG4 Home Theatre Video pPlatform(640x480 resolution),including 640x352,512x288,484x264,576x320 resolution too.
It can support 720x576,720x320 resolution too.
The video can support DIVX4.1.2,DIVX5.0.2,DIVX5.05 and DIVX5.1.
The audio can support MP3 CBR,AC3 and PCM.
The unit does not support DIVX3.11 and DIVX3.X.

I have some avi, xvid files that i want to convert if needed so that they are compatible.
Anyone got any ideas on what software to use etc.
Sorry to be a pain but i am new to all of this.
    Many thanks for your help.

  4. For the most part XVID and DIVX are interchangeable. Most players that will play one will play the other. If your player doesn't play XVID you can try the following:

    1) Use a fourcc code changer to change the fourcc code from XVID to DX50 (DIVX 5). This is the fastest and easiest solution if it works.

    2) There are some features of both XVID and DIVX that most stand alone players can't play: Global Motion Compensation (GMC) and Quarter Pixel (QPEL). If this is your problem you'll need to reencode without those features. You can use VirtualDub or one of its variants (all free) to convert. This is the slowest solution and it will degrade the video a little, at best.

    3) Audio could also be a problem. Either the audio codec used or the bitrate. Many players don't like low bitrate MPEG audio (like 56 kbps). In that case you can reencode just the audio, again with a program like VirtualDub.

  6. Download a fourcc changer:

    https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=AVI_FourCC_Code_Changer

Open the AVI file with it, select the desired fourcc code, save.

Fourcc codes are simply four character identifiers that indicate what codec was used to compress the video, and hence what codec to use to decode it.
