  1. Hello there – I’m not quite sure if a similar thread has been posted before – apologies if it has – but any help would be much appreciated.

I used to be able to use both my front/back panel USB 2.0 ports and firewire on a Win XP Home edition machine but since I clean-installed the system, put Win XP Pro on and upgraded to SP2 I lost my 4 back panel USB ports and my firewire. The front panel USBs are working fine.

The Control Panel (Device Manager) tells me that all the USB ports and the IEE1394 card are enabled, they are working properly and that there aren’t any conflicts. However, when I try to plug in my Panasonic NVGS11 camcorder or the printer to the back panel USBs or firewire, nothing shows up. Nothing is detected. The front panel, as I said, no problems, camcorder and printer both recognised. I could of course capture DV via USB and Windows Movie maker but for quality reasons I’d rather use firewire.

I checked my drivers and they are all up-to-date (at least that’s what Microsoft tells me)..I also checked the BIOS, everything fine there too (all USBs enabled). I tried a few times to uninstall and re-install the firewire card, but still no joy. Any ideas ? Does that sound like a software or hardware problem ? My gut reaction is that the problem may have to do with SP2. Would uninstalling it provide a solution ? any success stories out there ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Nick

  2. If it worked before SP2, it should work after you put Sp1 back.

I read that MS is going to make Sp2 an automatic update after April 12th & you won't be able to say no to it like you can now. That should be interesting.

Doesn't seem likely that SP2 would have anything to do with it. I assume the main connections are on the rear of the Firewire/USB card? And your front connections are off the card itself?.

If so, it sounds like a hardware problem with your card. You could check with the card manufacturer and see if there is a jumper or something that could have disabled the rear connections, but I've never seen anything like that.

The connections should all be common to each other, probably on separate channels, but they should all work at the same time. Only other thing I can think of is to unplug the front connections and see if that restores the rear ones.

if you check the device properties for the usb there is a tab called "power" that will tell you what devices are connected to them.

you could try plugging basic devices like a mouse or keyboard in to them to see if they work.

and just a though, ieee1394 is a network device in windows (it shows up in the network connections), see if the firewall is on for it.. if so, try disabling & then connecting your device.

hello there - thanks for this.. When you say to "disable and connect my device", do you mean disable the ieee1394 in network connections and physically remove the card, then reboot, then plug in the firewire card again ? Or do you mean, disable the firewall ?

    thanks for all your help

The power tabs for the USBs say "2 port(s) available - power required: 0mA". Guess it's OK.

I have disabled both the firewire from network connections and the firewall - still my machine cannot detect the camera from either the back panel USBs or firewire. Next step I think is to uninstall SP2 (go back to SP1) and see if it works as SP2 has been known for compatibility issues with USBs..

Many thanks for all the contributions
