well start with step one. get a new mobo and see if everything else still works.

and if everything does works. let the computer run for 48-72 hours, basically break it in just to make sure everything is good.

Generally the 4 conductor plug from the PS is for the separate CPU power. You should try to locate the exact location of the part that burned up. If it's on the MB, then you have no choice but to replace it. Hopefully the CPU and everything else is OK.

I'm not sure why having it unplugged would fry the MB, but I guess it depends on the MB.

  9. I also forgot to plug the 4-pin connector
in on a PC but nothing happened.
The PC didn't even boot up, no beep, nothing. (Asus)

After I plugged in the 4-pin everything worked fine.

Pull everything apart and start over.
Make sure there aren't any small wires
or pieces of solder shorting anything out.

    Also, double-check all connections. Make
sure all PCI cards, etc, are installed
    correctly.

Also make sure everything is compatible in the
    system that you're building.

    Check for overclocking too.

Remove any external USB connectors just to be sure. An old Epox board I had used non standard pinouts on the USB connectors and the +5V was shunted to signal ground by my standard adapters. Lotsa smoke!

I've blown up plenty of stuff in my day. Electric shock, smoke, that funny plastic burn smell, fire.

Generally, Shadow57 is correct, if you forget to plug in the 4 pin connector, the pc shouldn't boot up.

It could be, you went wrong somewhere else. some computer details would be great.

  13. Antitrust19,

Did you remember to use thermal paste before you
installed the heatsink on the CPU?

Also, make sure you smooth the paste or you will
have small air pockets that will overheat.
