  1. Ok, this is crazy.

I have a pioneer DV-343. On the DVD page it says I can play SVCD's up to 2600 bit rate. I have been making VCD's for a while, never had a problem. But everytime I try to make a SVCD it stutters. The quality looks good, but not watchable. I have tried multiple things, but can't figure out where the stuttering comes from. I thought for a while it couldn't handle SVCD's but others claim that theirs play SVCD's perfectly.

If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated. Most recently the way I have been trying is:

    1) Capture with vdub at 704 x 480
    2) Resize filter in vdub to 480 x 480 and frameserve to TMPEGenc
    3) Use standard SVCD template, just to get it working for now
    4) Convert!

    Any ideas???

    Thanks.

  2. Try deinterlace (blend fields) filter in virtualdub

  3. I've seen the same thing on my pioneer dv-440. Running the clip through bitrate showed that it occasionally jumped above 2700 kb/s. SVCD max is 2600. I can work around it by changing the bitrate in TMPGEnc to 2500 Constant bitrate (CBR). I believe that TMPGEnc tends to be a bit generous with the maximum bitrate.

  4. TMPGEnc's default SVCD template uses the constant-quality variable bitrate mode. While I've never seen it produce an incompatible SVCD stream that didn't work on my DV-343, it is possible that it allows excessive bitrate spikes. If you want to be sure, use the 2-pass VBR. This will also allow you to calculate the max bitrate you can use to fit your video on one disc.

    carrier_20,

Try this, maybe your audio bit rate too low. I know that if I use 128 on
mpeg1 encodes, it studders or spits kinda like.

Anyway, when I raised it to 192k, spitting went away. But, may not work
    for you.

My apex AD-1500 can handle 4000, for mpeg2 stuff from my PVR usb, and anything
else above 4000 will cause video to studder.

    hope it works for ya.
