  1. I record video using my Lite-On 5001 DVD recorder. I then take these DVD+VRs that it creates and view them on my PC. There I use Dr. Divx to convert the VOBs to DIVX AVI files, which I then use Virtualdub to remove commercials and perform general trimming activities.

The problem is that Dr. Divx is the only tool I've found that can take a VOB and convert it into something I can manipulate. The other programs I've used on the VOBs kill the audio sync and frame rates (video flow speeds up, down, all around).

My longterm goal is to create DVDRs full of my favorite TV shows, with each episode trimmed down to its own video file. I'd like to make these files MPGs so I can watch them on most any DVD player (that can play MPGs on a disc), but as it is now I can watch them only on my Philips DVD player which supports DIVX playback.

    A little help, folks?

  2. MPEG Video Wizard is the tool you need. It does exactly what you want: you can load up VOB files, do all editing/trimming, and export them as mpeg's without any re-encoding. I use it for exactly the same thing you describe -record my favorite TV show (Seinfeld), cut out all the commercials, and author DVD with edited mpeg files. Using SP recording mode, you can fit 6 21-22 min. episodes (the length after cutting out commercials) on one disc.
