  1. i've been using tmp plus for the longest time now. just recently i was trying to encode this avi but couldn't with tmpg. it 'd start to encode and then just hang. giving a continuous still image through the end of the movie. my friend suggested to give mainconcept a try so i did. it encode fine and the quality is unnoticable from the originial. i use the vcd template. i know prog are boil down to just personal preferences but i want to hear what are your takes on this. if there is another prog plz feel free to mention it. thanks.

I've always used Mainconcept for DVD encoding (usually around 5 - 6 MB/s rate depending on file size) and have found it to be pretty good. However, just lately, after reading other forum posts and doing my own testing, I'm beginning to think tmpgenc is a bit better in output quality. The big minus (for me) is that it takes more than twice as long to encode than Mainconcept, and this could mean the difference between, say, 2 hours and 5 hours to encode!
Is slightly better quality worth the extra time to encode? I haven't decided yet. I'm currently working on a big video project (approx. 11 hours) so I'm going to have to make that decision!

  3. I like Mainconcept's output. There are numerous settings you can use to get better output, even better than tmpgenc in some cases, and usually in half the time.
