  1. Well I've finally got bored of waiting for a dual layer, 5.1 encoding recorder to come out and have decided to go out and get one of these new fangled DVD Recorder things...

    Anyway, where to start

Budget is (max)£300, however I am not sure what I want!! What I do know is that I want firewire, and -r recording. I am not sure if I need a HD as I have Sky+, so really it is more for backing up from there.

I have seen many recorders, but don't know where to start!! anyone help??

    edit: forgot a bit

Are there any recorders out there that you can add a HD to later? and with the firewire, is it easy to connect up to a PC? is it a DV in/out??

As for the Firewire issue: I have a Pioneer DVR-510H (current model is the 520H) that has Firewire in and out. You need to use a camcorder or a PC video editing application that exports (or imports) via Firewire to connect to the Pioneer this way. Most brands with Firewire only allow import, not export. In order to export via Firewire from the Pioneer it first must be recorded to the HDD or a DVD. You cannot export live TV via Firewire.
