  1. hI,

    I'm new to making DVD.

I just wonder if anyone would be ableto help me.

What I'm trying to do is to capture footage from my DV camcorder and I want to add subtile into it.

what program should I use to add the subtitle?
Is there any tutorial for this?

    Thank you
    Arda

    I suggest
    - tranfer: WinDV
    - edit: Premiere
    - encode: Mainconcept
    - author: Ulead DVDWS2

Not really sure where the sub part comes in.
    Probably at authoring stage (DVDWS2)

Can also try DVDLab Pro. It has subtitle and only cost half of DVDWS2.

Actually, what you need to do is transfer the DV footage to the computer.

The Search Function is a powerful too but this subject is too complicated until you have established some degree of functionality.

Here is a list of tutorials for converting DV to Whatever.

One of the good programs for turning your DV into DVD format is TMPGEnc

Another program will be necessary for Authoring a DVD

Burning a DVD of your Authored DVD file requires a DVD Burner and burning software.

Break down your project into these steps.
    • Capturing (transfering your DV to computer) the material you want to work with.
    • Revisit a Guide specific to the step you are working on.
    • Choose an encoding software (trial software) and try to create an MPG file.
    • Revisit a Guide specific to the step you are working on.
    • Look for Authoring software.
    • Revisit a Guide specific to the step you are working on.
    • Burn a DVD of your authored DVD file
    • Revisit a Guide specific to the step you are working on.
Fill out your Computer details in your Profile. When you get to using software and have specific questions, this will help those offering soulutions.

  5. Adding subtitles is easy, making them is the hard part.I suggest just using titles in Ulead VideoStudio, etc.

I use Editstudio and DVDLab Pro. Editstudio handles capture, editing, subtitle generation, and with the MPEGXS plugin (Mainconcept engine) encodes to MPEG2. The subtitles can be exported to a .SUB file which you can import directly into DVDLab Pro. Chapter markers can also be created In Editstudio and imported into DVDLab, useful since DVDLab doesn't have audio preview.

  7. Thanks for the replies!

Is there any (one) Software that does all of those without switching from one software to another.

I know how to capture into MPEG format but I don't know how to make subtitle and intergate it into the MPEG file which will be ready to burn into a DVD.

    Thank again

Ulead DVD Workshop does everything, capture, convert, add switchable dvd subtitles, author, and burn.

But I would use separate software...for best control and video quality.

Agreed Baldrick. But what about the cost? Lordsmurf has suggested an array of s/w packages. No doubt these are some of the best but surely an overkill for an average user?

    Okay, now what about this:

    I suggest
    - tranfer: WinDV (free!)
    - edit: Avid FreeDV (free!)
    - encode: Procoder Express ($60)
    - author: TDA ($45)

But NO SUBS. If you want subs, it'll either take MORE WORK (freeware like DVD Author GUI, or whatever it is), or MORE MONEY (to get something easier like DVDWS2).

The average user learning curve is FAR LESS than the average user budget.

And we are, after all, NOT TALKING ABOUT average user here, as average users do not get into subtitles.
