PEOPLE and NBC Release Poll on Teen Sex

This is very enlightening for those of us who have kids -- or maybe also if you are a kid ...

When it comes to teens and sex, there's a lot of hype and few solid answers. Does oral sex happen in middle school? We didn't know, because there was very little research on 13- and 14-year-olds. Until now.

PEOPLE and NBC News decided to find out more. ........ As part of our reporting, we commissioned Princeton Survey Research Associates International to conduct a nationally representative telephone survey of young teenagers aged 13 to 16 and their parents.

The results – the PEOPLE/NBC News National Survey of Young Teens Sexual Attitudes and Behaviors – break new ground, covering almost the full spectrum of teen sex, including oral sex.

    Here are some highlights:
    • Sexual activity (ranging from intimate physical contact to intercourse and oral sex) is as common among boys as it is among girls, but it is more common among 15- and 16-year-olds (41 percent) than 13- to 14-year-olds (14 percent).

    • Girls are more likely than boys to disapprove of teens engaging in oral sex or sexual intercourse.

    • Teens who live in urban areas (33 percent) are more likely to be sexually active than suburban teens (24 percent). Teens in rural areas (27 percent) fall in between.

    • Suburban teens (60 percent) are more likely to say teens who have oral sex are still virgins than urban teens (45 percent).

Yeah I hear ya. Kids are doing things younger and younger anymore. Granted I'm not that old but they do way more than I used to do.

  6. Well, as long as they wear a condom then I suppose it is OK. I dread to think how many do not wear one because they are too embarassed to get a hold of some.

That very true. I know when you in the 6th grade, you don't really have an easy way of getting them.

A condom wasn't available during my 6th year of high school.

Anyway, I never experienced sex in school until much mature 18.

    6 years of high school?

and yea -- sex IN the school is not as much fun (well sometimes) as home in bed or in the car, even if you wait till your 18 to do it in the school .. :P

a lot of this is due I bet to both parents working now vs. only one working parent .... kids got a lot more time alone after school ...

Yeah, sex in bed is nice. Being that I tend to fall asleep right after anyways. I just got to wake up and get gone before the husband comes home

I do recall seeing something that said that teens tended to have sex at home more nowadays because there was like a two hour window of oppertunity because parents worked more now. I do find it a little bit hard to beleive that the numbers have changed all that much from past times. Sex is universal and teens have been doing it all along. I think that the polls are possibly flawed. I mean that the openness now would seem to be greater not actually the deed.

Ahh. To be young again...If I knew then what I know now...

I know that I am getting old because I like to look at nice young girls and have impure thoughts, that is until they open their mouth and I realize that there is nothing that we could ever talk about. (see I told you I was getting old, thinking about talking instead of sex) I think I may go kill myself now

Yeah, the condom thing bothers me. on the one hand i think they should be available in school toilets, but i know they would just get taken to make johnny-bombs.

Maybe if they were in the girls toilet, although then they still need to convince the boys to wear them. i suppose the best way is for parents to teach children what safe sex is and when they reach ~12 tell them there are condoms in the bathroom and they'll always be there. but that involves parents talking to their kids, so i guess that'll never happen.

  13. I think kids would be much more likely to get condoms and wear them if there is no human interaction required. It's all very taboo - remember the first time you went to Boots to pick up a pack of Durex? I felt more than a little self-conscious.

Also, the advertising of condoms as a "mature" thing to younger people would go down a storm, if done correctly.

I don't quite know how they could be distributed without the supply being abused, though.

I suppose a marketing campaign of girls saying no to guys because they don't have a condom would be great. it'd make lads think they needed condoms to have sex, so they'd get them somehow or other.

First time i bought them was from the chemist over the road from my house. by the time i plucked up the courage to go get them it was ok in the shop. now i just buy online and they get shipped in brown paper packets

Suburban teens (60 percent) are more likely to say teens who have oral sex are still virgins than urban teens (45 percent).
WTF does this mean? Are they implying performance of oral sex is a loss of virginity? Total bullshit, if it is.

Virginity is not lost once a _____ enters the _____ cavity.
There are not any "open spaces" to the definition.

The wang must enter the love canal. 8) (keeping language clean)

    Anything else is just petting.

    On the subject of condoms:

A lady store clerk looks up one day to see little Johnny standing in front of the condom display with a puzzled look on his face. She thinks to herself that this can be a good time to teach such a young boy about the ins and outs of sex, so to speak. She walks over and asks if she can help. Little Johnny says "Yeah, I want to buy some rubbers!" Taken by suprise at his boldness the clerk says "Well we don't call them rubbers, they are called condoms." Johnny says "Yeah, right whatever." The lady thinks that Johnny needs a lesson in humility and says "Well I don't know if they even sell them in your size." Johnny puts his hands on his hips, puffs out his chest and says "Well they stretch don't they?"

On a more serious note: I don't know for a fact if kids are starting sex sooner or more often than before. But there are some issues that need to be addressed. Family values start at home. It is first of all the parents job to make sure that their children know about the world around them. Parents must help teach their children about sex and its repercussions. And if (more like when ) young people start to have sex, all safegaurds should be made available to them. Once young people have started to have sex it is too late to try and stop them or teach them. So a church protesting the sales of condems to minors blew their chance to teach the kids their beleifs. And government officials that say that schools shouldn't take part in planned parenthood programs have missed the boat by not having good enough sex ed classes. Closing the barn door after the animals have gotten out does very little. Yes it is ultimatley the kids choice and actions that matter in the end, but it is adults that set the precidents for kids to follow.

It's taboo because the people we've looked up to all our lives (clergy, teachers, but especially parents) MADE it taboo. It's in the parents' court. Call body parts what they are when washing a toddler, and don't be embarrassed should a child say it in public, but teach the child about the propriety of it. Bring home condoms and talk about it. These things reinforce the idea that the child can talk about anything, and that'll help with other touchy subjects, too.

Of course, you could always do your best and STILL have the child end up republican...
