I'm looking into gettting a new dvd-rom drive. Which one(s) are fast/quality readers. Going to be used almost 100% for ripping.

I was looking at these two models so far

    LG Electronics Black DRD-8160 16X DVD-ROM Drive

    NEC DV-5800A 16X DVD Drive

    If in doubt, Google it.

i have had a very hard time finding decent reviews of DVD-rom drives
the reviews of writers on this site are the shiznit! but why aren't there any reviews of read-only drives?

    i bought the $ony DDU1613 because it's supposed to read @ 16x, but it won't
does fine on single-layer discs, but won't read over 6x on dual-layer discs

the dvd burners read problem discs better so would it be worth getting a dvd burner instead of a dvd-rom

this is why i bought a DVD-rom drive
i wanted to 'save' my burner from the wear and tear of ripping in addition to burning

  8. The AOpen 1648 AAP will rip faster (pressed DL discs) with stock firmware than the Liteon 167T with hacked firmware. I have used both and they are very good drives. The Aopen has better error correction but is hard to find. Both cost about the same, just make sure you get improved firmware if you choose the Liteon. Interestingly, the NEC 3500 series clobbers both these drives ripping SL burned discs so it depends on what you are ripping. Go figure.

    I have just purchased a LITE-ON SOHD-167T.
The F/W that was installed when I received it is 9S19,
however, I still have a problem. I was given some OPTODISCR004 and it does not read them. I reported this to tech support and have asked if there is F/W update to support that media. Have not received a reply as yet.

jimmalenko, would you please supply a link to the F/W you are using.

Some OEM versions have the max ripping speed throttled back, but the retail versions don't.

Check this out, and possible firmware hacks before you buy

Dual-layer discs will NEVER rip at full speed. If you're getting 6x on a dual-layer, that's just fine.

Many of us have had great results with this firmware. Optodisc has a history of being a problem media.

Not quite right. I got close to 10X with Liteon and codeguys firmware. I get over 10X all the time with AOpen. This is with DL discs. The rip speed starts at 5.5X and goes up from there. See here for more info on rip speed.
