I've transferred a bunch of NTSC videos tapes to DVD using my Tosbiba DVD Recorder. I don't like the basic Toshiba menus, so I have been trying to rip these DVDs to my HD, make a simple menu with Sonic (I've also tried Ulead Movie Factory 3), import the ripped .VOB files, and burn the whole thing back to DVD.

Pretty simple. All of this has worked perfectly except for one thing: the audio and video are totally out of sync--it looks like a bad karate-movie dub. Any thoughts or directions to point me in? I've downloaded and used other programs, yet all have given me the same audio shift. It starts off fine, yet is off 3-5 seconds towards the end of the disc!

Again, I'm just ripping the files from the master DVD, making a nice menu, and burning the files right back--no changes or messing with anything.

I've also tried convertig the .VOBs to .MPEG2, and importing those new files, but have had the same problem.

I feel really dumb here, and hope someone can get my limited experience and understanding in order!

DMF3 is notorious for sync problems. But since you've had similar problems with other software you might want to try defragging your hard drive.

Your profile doesn't state anything about your computer. Generally speaking its best to have C drive for your system/software and D drive for your video files, so you might want to check on that, too. Filling out your computer profile might aid others in determining your problem(s).

    Good Luck!

Thanks--I updated my profile with my computer specs. I have tried this on my new notebook, and on my 2.0ghz/512mb desktop--same latency on both. I used DVD decrypter to rip the files.

The master discs are fine--audio and video are in perfect sync.

Are there other tools I should use to rip these non-protected (home) movies? I'm wondering if DVD Decrypter is doing something funny because the master is fine, but the .VOBs is rips are jacked up.

Is there a program that would rip them from the master to .mpeg2 with a better chance of success? I'm running out of ideas here...

Since the disc isn't copy protected you should be able to copy the VOB files to your HDD via Windows Explorer. To get MPEG2 files follow the instructions below. (The Fix & Correct AC3 option might help with the audio.)

Demuxing Audio & Video from files on your Hard Drive using Rejig:

    1. Start Rejig.
    2. Select File Mode.
    3. Under Job List, click ADD, then choose the file(s) you want to demux. When ready, click DONE.
    4. Under Stream List & Demuxing, highlight MPEG video Stream.
    5. Name your Output file.
    6. Click Demux.
    7. Repeat steps 4, 5, & 6 for your Audio Stream. (NOTE: If the Audio Stream is AC3, be sure to tick Fix & Correct AC3 Delay before clicking Demux.)

Remuxing Audio & Video to MPEG2 (VBR) using TMPGEnc:

    1. Start TMPGEnc. (If the WIZARD opened, close it.)
    2. Click Files/MPEG TOOLS.
    3. Select the Simple Multiplex Tab.
    4. In the "Type" pulldown, select MPEG-2 Program (VBR).
    5. Locate the elementary Audio & Video Streams.
    6. Name your Output file.
    7. Click Run.

Other people may have other ideas using the same (or different) tools, but this is what always works best for me. (If I missed a step or two, I'm sure you'll figure it out.)

OK--I'm an idiot--let me get this straight:

DVD Decrypter has ripped the files just fine. The .VOBs play just fine, and have no audio latency.

When I attempt to burn those untouched .VOBs back to disc using Sonic, ULM3, Nero, or whatever, there seems to be some sort of wacky conversion/interpretation issues.

I'd think it would just be a case of copying the .VOBs, and not a need for the programs to mess with the files. The fact is, I haven't been able to.

This just seems to be a problem that occurs when burning the files/new menu back to disc.

So knowing that the .VOBs I've ripped from the master discs play just fine on my computer, and all I really want to do is make simple little menus for the videos and burn them straight back to disc, are there any programs I can download or buy that would work better than Sonic/ULM3?

I've seen the new Adobe Encore, but I'm not sure if it would do any more for me than what I have.

Sorry for the confusion and needing to have my hand held here, and thanks in advance for any further help.

  7. VOB's created on a DVD recorder contain only one video file and one audio file. You should be able to save them to your hard drive (you can even rename them with the .mpg extension and they should work fine).

Download the trial version of TMPGEnc DVD Author. It accepts VOB's without demuxing and authors without any re-encoding. If the audio file is AC3, you won't be able to hear it during editing and chapter selection, but it will be there in the finished DVD.

    Hi

I also use a Toshiba DVD recorder (D-R2), but I use SmartRipper to rip the vob files from the DVD-R/RW (no file splitting, max filesize.) The only times that I've had sync issues was when I tried to use transitions in MediaStudio Pro or Womble MPEG Video Wizard 2003.

The only other thing I do is use Womble MPEG Video Wizard 2003 to convert the files to MPEG-2 after cutting the commercials or other unwanted footage. Again, I cannot use transitions or the audio sync goes out of whack. Files are ok using Ulead MF3 and DVD Workshop2 - no sync issues.

Here's another thing you can try: shutting of some of your computer process when working with audio, video, and burning. (Note: some people say this is no longer necessary, but I don't believe it for a minute.)
This link should help with that. http://www.blackviper.com/ As I recall, it it a bit of searching to find the right page.

Gang--thanks a ton! gshelley61-- TMPGEnc DVD Author did the trick--everything has worked out perfectly. I wish TMPGEnc DVD Author allowed you to add audio to the menus, but that is just a small wish.

    Thanks again everyone!
