I'm using mac the ripper, and I need to find an easy, free program to shrink DVD's to fit on single 4.7g DVD's. If anyone knows of any good ones that work and are fairly easy to use, please let me know where I can download them. Thanks.

You have enough money to buy a computer, a DVD burner, DVD media and the original copy of the DVD you're wanting to shrink (wink), so why can't you spend a few bucks to support the hard working folks who write the software you want to use? Then again, if someone wanted to make this free to me, would I refuse?
But the answer to your question is there is no Mac freeware for requantizing dual-layer DVDs to fit single-layer media. Why give away what you can sell? -
actually, the dvd burner is at work, on a g5 with dual 1.8's. needless to say i like being able to utilize this mac for dvd stuff. i don't want to spend any money on the software because i have a pc at home and i can do this all with free software. so what i've been doing, is using the ripped files from mac the ripper, and using dvd shrink to fit them on a single layer dvd (and yes you can fit a dual layer on a single). dvd shrink compresses it to fit on a single layer dvd, but i'm getting errors when i compress it using pc software.

If you don't care about menus/extras etc. and don't mind a single AC3 soundtrrack, you can use MTR to demux the streams from your DVD and use the free Minx Transcoder. To shrink your files.

So in actualality, you are basically using company property
to rip your dvds upon which you transport them home
to shrink/burn, most likely via FW/USB drive, and because
( most likely) of the means of transport, you are getting
i/o errors.
Here's a simple thing: Don't do stuff like this without
getting your IT people on your side. Chances are if
your IT guys find out what your doing ( and a lot
LURK on this site, you'd be surprised)
your user account may get a little house cleaning.
Now, if you are the IT person at your company, then
tell your boss you need to buy Toast ( with the Popcorn
add-on) and use that to compress and burn on the Mac,
and avoid the PC altogether. I can think of a MILLION
reasons why I would legitimately need Toast, so
it should be easy to sell the idea to your boss."Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

Here's what I recommend.
Use MTR to rip the SOB!!
Use DvD2One to shrink the SOB!!
Use Roxio to burn the SOB!!
None is free except MTR , b/c they are nice to us
You can use DragonBurn for a free trial for a while. It's a burning software.

Buy Popcorn. You can get download it from Roxio or if you want a box and CD from Amazon. It does the shrinking and burning in 1 step.

So Popcorn is about the same as DVD shrink? Minus the extract?

I'm having problems using rippers & shrinkers... I'm currently running DVD Back Up > Dvd2ONE > Toast. But some reason it's not consistant. I got King Arthur to work fine, but shrek 2 & resident Evil errors out. Does anyone know where i can download MTR? whats the average time it takes someone to rip, shrink, & burn?

Have you tried searching this forum for answers to some (if not all) of your questions?
-
yes, i've tried but the problems everyone else is having isn't consistant with mine. I'm trying out MTR right now, and so far so good...
