I have simple question: Given the many encoders available, i.e. eo, mainconcept, ulead etc, why would one pay so much for the Canopus product? From what I understand the quality is not that much better.
It is more of a question for curiosity sake. I am NOT in the market for a $500 video conversion tool.
Thanks,
Bob

Procoder is one of the best.
It's not meant for low-end consumers like you.
It's a semi-pro tool.
There is video equipment that costs up to $100,000+
And there's also freeware and cheapware.
And everything in between.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I would vote for procoder express, it gives similiar quality to Tmpg enc but is faster.
Tmpg enc is better for difficult files though, but prooder is great for ntsc/pal conversions BTW.
Good luckPAL/NTSC problem solver.

The software Cinema Craft Encoder SP is $1950US. Makes TMPGEnc encoder look like a real bargain.

"Similar" results to this and that program. Similar is either better or worse. not Exact. Even 5 #'s up or down on the brightness or whatever is going to appear as "different quality". So, enough of this similar crap. Better? or Worse?

Sometimes it's hard to get a simple answer to a simple question here....
As another post indicated, Procoder Express is more the consumer/hobby version and in my opinion the proper version to compare to TMPGenc. For DV to Mpeg2 (for DVD) I do like the Procoder express results a bit better. As far as flexability to handle different input, I wouldn't know because I do mostly DV and still jpegs.
I think procoder express is a very good value. I also own the "Box Version" of TMPGenc DVD Author which contains TMPGenc Creator which is a simplified encoder that, to my eyes, does the same as their standalone encoder. but I'm no expert on the standalone as I only had the trial version prior to buying TDA w/ TMPGenc Creator. -
Procoder has some extra features that Procoder express lacks, like the mastering quality option which may be a little better than the best quality setting in procoder express. You can also convert to a wide range of different formats with Procoder and also do several formats at the same time. If you only are going to make mpeg2 then the price difference between Procoder Express and Procoder is not worth it unless you are willing to pay a lot for that small quality difference.
In the same way you can get Cinema Craft Encoder Basic instead of CCE SP. The quality difference is not huge but there are more options to tweak in CCE SP.
