Can a tracking problem affect only the audio and not video? I have a tape where the video looks fine and the audio is fine, but you can hear electronic noise that ruins the sound track.
My VCR is a JVC 9911 that is supposed to do automatic tracking. The remote doesn't even have tracking buttons.

The noise you are hearing is from the audio hifi heads on the video drum, they are not tracking properly, not much you can do,try cleaning the heads or use another machine.

This usually means the recording deck was screwed up.

You can try to use the channel up/down buttons while playing a tape to adjust the tracking manually. A lot of VCR's do it like that. That works with my JVC's.Originally Posted by sync
If still no avail try to switch to MONO sound as the last option. -
The sound disappears when I use the Normal audio setting, which I assume is JVC speak for mono. Thanks!Originally Posted by The_Doman

Normally a stereo(hifi) recording has also a mono audio track. The stereo track is very sensitive to tracking/signal errors.Originally Posted by sync

I had a tape like this once. I bypass the problem with manual tracking... But it wasn't easy!
When I had acceptable audio, the video was distorted. When the video looked perfect, the audio was terrible.
So, I captured twice the same tape: One for Video and one for audio. I split the capturing to quarters, to avoid huge lipsynch issues and later manually, I try to adjust audio / video stream. I manage to fix it, but it took me much time...
Of course this is not a solution. Just an alternative to do your job done!La Linea by Osvaldo Cavandoli
