Had this question in the back of my mind recently...
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=249922&highlight=
Does this mean that if you use a six pin Firewire cable into the back of the ADVC-50, then there would be power running through the Firewire Cable?
This would make sense in the post above, where he had the ADVC-50 powered from the main PC power supply AND through the firewire input at the back.
I saw recently that a four pin cable would be signal only, but a six pin firewire cable would also carry an electrical supply. So therefore it would make sense that the ADVC-50 can be powered from the six pin firewire cable connector at the back of the unit.
Just curious as I have not had much experience using firewire (only for my ADVC-50)...

Isn't that the 55 your referring too.... The 50's a PCI card. The 6 pin does carry power.
It appears so though:
ADVC55 AC Kit – sold separately
> 1 x AC power adapter
> 1 x FireWire cable (6-pin – 4-pin)
I don't think they would sell it without a power supply if it couldn't be powered via the firewire. Yes -
It is the 50 I am reffering to. There is a six pin port at the back of the PCI card. A four pin port is in the front of the unit.
In the post I linked to, the OP said that they had connected a six pin Firewire cable to the rear port which appeared to result in a power overload.
The 55 unit can be powered using a six pin Firewire as far as I know, thus the evidence should suggest that the 50 may be the same.Cole -
I don't see why not, you need to know what the pin assignments are on your mobo and what they are on the Canopus. I had to replace the front cover on my case and one of the things it said was the pin assignments on the mobo can vary....I thinkOriginally Posted by Cole
Might have been the USB pin assignments they were refferring too I don't remember and can't seem to find the paper.

The guide below says that the 50 in not powered by Firewire but the 55 is.

But what happens to the electrical supply from the six pin cable? Maybe they just disconnected in the ADVC-50.
May have to try it one day...
