  1. I've been using Nero's software to make my home DVDs and I'm getting tired of waiting 4-5+ hours for it to encode and burn. Are there any other software similar to Nero with the same features and produce quality picture and sound? Help a total newb out

I don't know about the same features, but a lot of people here use TMPGEnc encoder along with TMPGEnc DVD Author to do that. I've never used Nero for that purpose as, IMO, it doesn't do that very well.

There are a whole lot of guides here to direct you. <<<<<<<<

There's many. Without really knowing your process, it's a bit hard to recommend any handful of tools. Are you using Nero for everything (capture, encode, burn) ? Would you like a similar all-in-one type tool to handle everything for you, or do you want to get your hands dirty ? Check out the Tools and Guides sections for suggestions and instructions on quite a lot of different software, as well as a couple of forums searches, I say
    If in doubt, Google it.

On 1.8 GHz, expect around 0.5 real time encoding speed for avi to mpg encodes. (1 hr movie takes 2 hrs to reencode.) Varies with encoder, but generally speaking.

Double that if you want 2-pass vbr encoding. I can get better than .9 realtime from my Athlon 1800+ using CCE (slower if filtering and frameserving from VirtualDub, of course). I get much better than realtime from VSO DivxtoDVD. If you are looking for a free one-click wonder, check this out. It's not perfect, but its at least as good as Nero in a quarter of the time.

  6. I'm using Nero for my authoring and encoding of my videos. I'm willing to get my hands dirty. I'll have to give TMPGenc and TMPGenc DVD Author a try.

Using a 1.8 Duron (oc'ed to 2.1..so approx a 2.5AMD XP) I achieve UPTO 1.8 REAL TIME...but the ave is around 1.3 to 1.4 RT...rebooting before encoding (and killing services) DOES help..CCE by the way...using TMPG about a month or two....at least...per hour...
