The Silver Star is awarded to a person who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Army, is cited for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force, or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. The required gallantry, while of a lesser degree than that required for the Distinguished Service Cross, must nevertheless have been performed with marked distinction.

What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend?

The chances are that anyone who even lived through the second world war whilst serving is some kind of hero, if he has a medal too then I'd say its a given.

Oh yeah! Ask him how he got it. Don't worry, it won't be intrusive, as he is probably very proud of the srevice he did for his country, and would be happy to tell you all about it.

    'Tis a good term squire.

Back OT though, ask the guy and you may just be suprised, a word of caution though - some of these tales can be quite harrowing. A friend of mine asked a guy who never talked of the war what he did and one day he told him, a full 15 minutes of sheer horror was how my mate described it.

Then June came around and D-day was on the horizon so he did his duty and he was on the plane, surviving Normandy, Holland, Bloody Gulge, and Bastogne.

  13. If he was part of Easy Company -- he probably lost a lot of friends in Bastogne. Bastogne as a bloody fight.

In my eyes -- he would most definitely be a hero.
