  1. I have bene trying to find a program that will simply convert a 24bit stereo wav file to an 8bit mono wav file. i have gone through a few programs with no luck...

dbpoweramp has the option, but the output is always a very small size and unuseable wav. i also thought virtualdub might allow audio conversion, but no matter hwo hard i look, i cant find any option to output an audio conversion alone. does anyone know of another program to do this?

  3. hmm i tried that one too, but the output was a useless file liek the one i got from dbpoweramp

i imported the wav and then made the settings for the conversion and hit export wav, but then the output was only 2kb.

what am i missing here to get it to output properly

set rate 8k (down arrow at top of track header box)
    export As Wav

  5. hmm ok i did all of that and now at least it did better, but it only exported a 10 second long file. the wav is 24 minutes long, is there some other setting i need to make?

let me do one a different way and list every step

set project to mono mix, project rate to 8k (verify lower left)
    file open song (I opened a 4 min 44k, 16bit stereo song)
click on arrow on song header select split stereo track
    make each track "mono"
    under project select "quick mix"
you should now have a 16bit 8k mono file
    export as wave

Now I see you wanted 8 bits, oh well starting over
project preferences then "File formats" select Wav 8bit PCM under "uncompressed export format"
click on arrow on song header select split stereo track
    make each track "mono"
    under project select "quick mix"
you should now have a 8bit 44k mono file
    export as wave

  7. ok this is pretty weird now lol

im trying out audacity, tried following the steps here, but whenver i go to import audio, it pops up a box saying 'importing mp3' . after it completes it, its a mono track... but i know its a stereo track.

if it makes a difference, when i looked at what type of wav it is, it said 'ACM codec not installed' . could this mean im missing a codec and that is why im having all of these problems trying to convert one song?

How about importing it into Windows Audiorecorder then export it back out as whatever you want.

Sounds as if you're trying to create a ringtone
in this case if you have a newer ver. of nero wave editor this would be possible.

Open in nero wave editor and clip the part of the file you want then file>save as>and save as a 8k mono pcm wave

    done.

Oh ok, 'importing mp3' is a different animal from a wav entirely.
