I am converting vhs via mini-DV to Powerbook G4, to make DVD. Some of my material is black and white, but with a lot of noise. The colour green is prominent, as well as general "colour noise". What is the best way to restore the DV footage to black and white on the Mac before burning to DVD? I have 3 main options:

    1. QuickTime 7 Pro (black and white filter in export of DV film options)
    2. iMovie 5 (black and white filter in effects)
    3. Compressor 1.2.1 (restore black and white- filter)

    Any suggestions would greatly appreciated!

I would try the Sima COlor Corrector.
With that you could pull out all of the color info to make a true black and white DVD

Another option is MPEG Streamclip (freeware). Its adjustments screen will let you remove the color while also tweaking brightness and contrast.* Then you can do a quick preview of what the resulting video will look like before processing the whole file.

Although Streamclip was originally designed for MPEG files, it now works with DV and QuickTime movies (as well as many AVI files).

    - Open the DV file in Streamclip.

    - Export To DV: Adjustments: Saturation to 0; Brightness/Contrast to taste.

Ask if you need more tips.

*Please squared5, we desperately need an UNSHARP MASKING control on the adjustments screen, and a preview image of the current frame. Thank you.
