Hey i had some prior problems convertin a DIVX > MPEG 1 ( didn't know it was divx at the time... )
Now i figured out how to make it an AVI so i can successfully convert it to mpeg1...
Now i need to know hwo to make the file convert to AVI small enough.. (2 minutes into the movie and the files 3 gigabytes.)
Any feedback or ideas is greatly appreciated. thank you.

Use compression with a codec like huffyuv or picvideo. Also, what resolution is your file and what resolution are you converting to? It sounds like you are using something a lot larger than VCD resolution. If you are, and you are going to VCD, then you could lower your resolution to 352x240 (NTSC) and save a lot of space. Check out some of the guides on the left.
