Hi, I'm after a DVD-R which gives similar reliability as my Bulkpaq (orange), but has none of the printing on, enabling me so I can write on them or attach my own labels.
Any recommendations
Thanks
Mark

Be careful about placing labels on your DVD's. Do a search on the forums for DVD labels and you find alot of info on the issue.
Goto www.rima.com and look at the different media there. I use both the TY and Prodisc media.

Don't use labels
If you really want nice looking discs get a disc printer and some printable discs. -
I second the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs sold at RIMA.COM
Not only is this one of the best (if not THE best) blank DVD-R but it also has a plain silver shiny top making it easy to write on with a marker.
If you want to label I suggest you look into the CASIO printers. There is the CW-50 which must be used with a computer or the slightly more expensive CW-75 which can be used with a computer OR as a stand alone printer not hooked up to a computer as it has a small mini keyboard built-in.
These printers (sold at a variety of places including RIMA.COM) will print text and even simple logo designs directly unto just about any blank CD/DVD and it doesn't have to be a special "printer" type disc like those that use InkJet printers must use.
A friend of mine has the CASIO CW-75 and it prints very nicely on the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs which he purchases from RIMA.COM
The only other brand of DVD-R that I will use (other than Taiyo Yuden) is the Maxell DVD-R brand. Most packages will say MADE IN JAPAN and these are the real deal ... stay clear of Maxell DVD-R packs that say MADE IN TAIWAN as those will be of lesser quality. The only problem with Maxell discs (if you want to call it a problem) is that they do have a Maxell logo and writing on them.
You can find Maxell DVD-R discs at Wal-Mart, OfficeDepot and Staples with the later two often putting them on sale.

I bought full face Taiyo Yuden printables to print on with my Epson R200. Bit pricey at £60 per 100, but worth it.

I'd recommend Maxell Made in Japan media (MID: MXLRG03). I've burned many of these without a coaster or serious playback problem.
And, as steve suggested, do a search for labels here; but the consensus, I think, is that they are not good.

The fact alone that it is 16 pages long probably says enough about the fact that many people have had problems. -

I have been reading your posts regarding media and understand that the TY discs (best) and certain Maxell discs (very good if Japan) are the best. My query is that if you can use discs in your respective machine other than TY or Maxell for example, would the picture quality differ from TY to say Office Depot brand i.e.? Or are you just saying that you are more likely to get coasters from lesser media brands than the TY discs for example?
Thanks for your answer -
Picture quality will be identical, DVD is a digital format. But if you get crappy discs and they have errors on them, you'll have skipping issues, freezing, etc
-
Of course..re the digital format..thanks..will be getting my first DVD recorder tonight (UPS delivery today)...the 420H from Costco that was just on sale for $250. Am very excited...did make some successful copies out at my parent's house on my dad's machine. He had bought some on sale media from Office Depot. They look okay to me but I will buy either TY or Maxell in the future.
Thanks for the clarification.
