I have a 1GHz Pentium 3 system. I purchased a Pyro DV Link and will capture to my additional 80 GB hard drive. I want to get the best captures with little or no frame drops. If I try to shut down uneeded processes through task manager it takes too long since there are so many running. Also, it seems when ever I do it that way I usually will get an "unstable" message and the PC ends up locking up then I have to reboot and start all over. Any good suggestions on a simple, efficient way to get the uneeded processes shut down without going through all that trouble?

Some people say this is no longer necessary, but I don't believe it for a second.

This is what works for me:
    1. Click the START button (at the lower left hand corner).
    2. Click RUN.
    3. Type in "msconfig", and click OK.
(You should now see the System Configuration Utility)
    4. Click the STARTUP tab.
    5. Uncheck anything you don't want to run after re-booting. Theoretically you should be able to DISABLE ALL, but that might not be true.
    6. Click OK and re-boot your computer.
(When your computer re-boots, you'll get a message alerting you about SELECTIVE STARTUP mode, just ignore it and do your thing!)
    7. When you're done, run "msconfig" again and click NORMAL STARTUP and OK, then re-boot.
Your computer show now be operating normally.

The only danger i see in doing the above is shutting off any firewall you may have installed, leave the firewall checked if any running or unplug your network connection.

No worries about disabling a firwall if you disable your internet connection beforehand! While I'm rebooting, I disable the on-board lan in the bios (or unplug the cable if it's a card). I'm not sure if you will get the benefit of windows not loading all it's network crap, but it can't hurt! Then you can disable everything - your firewall, virus software, and any adware monitoring apps. I'd recommend also trying to disable as many of the little icons in the taskbar next to your time.

For extreme problems, I've created a new 'configuration profile' in windows. You'll get prompted when you boot to choose a configuration. Choose the new configuration, load up your control panel and 'disable' everything that won't disable your computer or effect importing video. Then reboot. Feel free to post here what devices you have, and we can provide assistance on what to disable. This method will free up more memory and irq's. This was recommended when I was using my old, horrible-to-configure ADS Instant DVD 1.0.

All this info looks promising. I'll have to try it. I did a few quick captures by just turning off hardware accelaration and they did good. I just want to be ready for some serious captures.

Best thing to do is clean it out.... Currently I have 22 processes running at startup. Including firewall, AV and MS spyware blocker. By default most XP mchines are about 30-35.

Try here: www.blackviper.com There's asection about setting up profiles that you can load on startup. You can make a specific profile just for capturing.

    Coalman,

This took a little while to set up, but it is sweet! Thanks!
