  1. Forgive the ignorance of this question...

I've been using DVD Shrink to backup some DVDs and it's great. I've noticed it can remove region encoding as well.

There is a movie I really want but it is only available in Australia. If I buy it will removing the region encoding allow me to watch it on my American DVD player?

I would love to know a little more about how this works. How can a NTSC and PAL video be stored on the same media? Does the DVD player convert it to the appropriate video format? Otherwise won't removing region encoding simply allow you to watch a video that doesn't have a compatble frame rate and size for your TV?

    Thanks everyone!

  2. Removing region coding won't convert it from PAL to NTSC, nor ar both stored on the same disk.

Easiest solution is to buy a cheap DVD player that converts PAL to NTSC on the fly. Software conversion is possible, but tricky.
There are several guides and many threads discussing this.

  3. Be sure wich PAL format you use in Oz (Pal M, Pal N, Pal B, etc). Sony DVD players do well with pal in general. Con is, they´re not that cheap.

He is not in Oz, he is in the USA, the DVD is from Oz.
DVD's do not care about the different types of PAL, AFAIK, nor do DVD players, as they output composite or S-Video or Component or RGB. The different PAL types only affect broadcast.

    FYI
My Sony DVP-NS725P will not do PAL.

But my super cheap Apex 1100 (512 mb model) will do PAL

Tell that to the TV set. Over here in Argentina we have Pal N, in Brazil it´s Pal B. If i play a Pal B DVD here, the image is B&W. You need a transcoder. So yeah, you should care about the type of pal. If you buy a $6.000 Plasma TV, chances are, you will only get Pal B, and every other pal format will be B&W.

  8. So it sounds like it'll be the luck of the draw... I doubt there is a guide that says which DVD players can handle certain types of PAL and which ones can't.

Assuming my DVD player &/or TV can't read the PAL correctly, what is the easiest and most effective way to convert the files to NTSC?
