  1. Hey guys, so here's my noisemakers:

Geforce4 MX 440 Fan (probably not a biggy, I don't htink I can hear it)
Maxtor 80.0GB Hard Drive (noisy little bastard, high pitch noise and some other frequencies too)
400W PSU (This is one of my two suspects for the major noise I'm hearing)
Thermaltake Smart Case Fan (The other suspect)
Thermaltake Silent Boost CPU cooler (not the noise source, this thing's quiet )

The thing is, when I start up the system, I only hear the hard drive and maybe a whisper from the fans. Then, as the system warms up, I start to hear a LOT MORE noise. Now, I checked the CPU fan and it's always running @ 2300 RPM so that's not it. I don't know whether it's my PSU or my Smart Case Fan. The Smart Case Fan's always running ~3450 so it could be my noise source. And I can't very well change the PSU fan as it's not a perfect square and it's power connections are sawtered onto the board (however u spell it).

    HELPO@@!@$#$@!$##@!

Unplug the Smart Case Fan for a couple of minutes and listen. If it is your power supply, get this http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=17-159-023&DEPA=0

The 120mm fan will be MUCH quieter.

  3. yeah i'll try that...just the thing is the last time i unplugged the smart case fan it heated up like a hot plate (idle temps went from mide 40's to upper 50's....still "safe" but definitely uncomfortable. however, i shall try as the goal here is to be able to leave the thing on overnight w/o going deaf and sleepless.

Get a Seagate Barrucuda 7200 SATA, quiet as a mouse. It's less than 2 feet away from me and it's so quiet you almost have to listen for it to hear it.

I have 2 Seagate Barracudas, not SATA, and they are silent. Seriously. If it wasn't for the light on the front I'd never know if it was working.
