Ok I have tried encoding my avi all at once to an mpeg2 for dvd, to no avail. One time I did it, I don't remember doing anything different it just ripped the video to a .m2v file. So I was like awesome, I'm halfway there. How can I rip just the audio from the avi file to a format that will be compatible with my dvd authoring software? This is probably really simple... I've just never done it before. This shouldn't take anywhere near as long as encoding the audio/video together correct?

Ffmpeggui will convert the audio in your avi straight to a DVD compliant AC3 file. Fast and free.

  3. use tmpgenc (dvd-pal or dvd-ntsc template). When encoding in stream type choose 'audio only'. BTW which software did you use for encoding to ES? It's better for sync purposes to use the same software for an audio encoding.

Anyways, I'd load the AVI in Goldwave, save wav. Make sure the wav is 48 kHz, else upsample to 48 kHz before saving. A wav should be accepted by most authoring apps, and hopefully reencoded by it to something less voluminous like mp2 or AC3. If not, you can encode the wav to mp2 with toolame or AC3 with ffmpeggui before authoring.
