  1. I'm trying to extract English subs from a Japanese DVD. They show up properly when I play the DVD in a standalone player and they also show up in a ffmpeg pulldown menu. But the only subtitles I can extract (or see when using ffmpeg to play the movie) are the Japanese ones. I tried to use SubRip on Virtual PC and while the subtitles actually did show up (in fact there were four sets of them: Japanese Widescreen and Ltrbox and English Widescreen and Ltrbox) there was something wrong with the font outlines and subrip wasn't able to create the proper matrix for the characters.
Is there a way of extracting a vob sub file in one chunk and then let a player like VLC to deal with finding the right subs? This is the only DVD out of maybe 20 that gives me that problem.

Just rip the dvd with MTR, then extract the vobsub with ffmpeg. Will work fine.

  3. That's exactly what I've been doing. Never had a problem until this particular DVD came along. So I guess now the question would be: are there any other tools to try out?

  4. I finally had to go to Windows and use VobSub which managed to extract entire set of subs (Japanese and English) in one file. I then used VobSub strip to extract just the English set.
