  1. Whenever I try to backup a DVD at some time I get slight stutters every now and again. I have tried using both DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter but get similar results. Does it make a difference if any programs/utilities are running in the background. I created a new profile in XP which has less programs running but I don't want to run my machine without firewalls and anti-virus. However, if this was a solution I could unplug my internet connection for a while. Basically I just want advice/opinions on the best conditions for creating/backing up DVDs.

It sounds like bad media. What media ID do your DVD's have?
If you can complete your Computer Specs in your profile it will help out for future questions. The only thing I don't due during the burning process is play games or do a virus scan.

  3. Windows XP SP2
    Pentium 4 3.4 GHz
    Radeon X600
    1024 MB RAM
    350 GB HDD spare
    2 DVD drives (one rewritable)

The DVds are some fairly cheap ones that I bought from SVP. I also bought some DVD RWs from them. Would it be worth using them instead?

I'm a newbie to this side of computing but what exactly do you mean by media ID?

It does sound like the media problem, I buy media from SVP as well, and avoid the 'cheaper' media

some say they don't have any problems, some say they are terrible, user preference again

but, if you're getting stuttering\pauses/freezing, thats usually down to the media

On SVP, I've a few well tested brands, and had no major problems

I've nearly finished a 50 spindle of ANV x8 DVD-R and apart from a single slight pause that may or may not happen they play perfectly (burn at x8 no problems), and I burn right to the edge

I've also use RiData x4 branded (good media), Ritek x4 white printable surface (the dye was getting worse and worse on them with spotting and frequent dye faults, so I've changed from them)

They don't seem to do them now, but I had very good results with A Grade Media x4. Very cheap, but they burnt and played excellant

I've just ordered a spindle of 50 Datawrite Titanium Silver media after reading excellant reviews of just how good they are, so I'll see how they go

I've personally found its not really worth it in the long run to buy media and saving a couple of £ and have aggrevation, I pay around £6 for a spindle of 25, and about £12 for a spindle of 50

But, its all down to what works for you. Obviosuly the media you are using isn't working for you. Try changing it to a better branded media, if possible

Have a look on CDFreaks.com, they have frequentl full testing of various media on loads of different writers. In-depth and I believe honest media reviews

Better media is probably your solution but you can try this, it won't cost you anything and can't hurt.

1.Make sure the software you are using to burn with is updated to the latest version. Which version you have can be found by opening the program and on the top click help>about (insert software title). Updates can be found on the vendor's site.
2.Update you DVD burner's firmware to the latest version. To find what version firmware you currently have see the manufactuer's site for details.
3.Try burning at a slower rate.
