  1. Howdy, I know someone here will have some kind of answer for me..

I recently got a Sony Dru-710a (updated firmware to xyz) even though I prefer Pioneer (like my old a05 4x) It was a gift.

So I thought burning at 8x would be the same as 4x, i ordered g05's 8x dvd-rs ritek...

HORRIBLE, i burned 30 and all were bad, they skipped on 4 dvd players until locking up. After a friend told me of course dont buy g05s..... even though g04s were always so good to me (damn near perfect 700burns), I tried Philips dvd-r 8x from officedepot 25 packs i bought 2, still DIDNT WORK!

I was losing it, i finally got Verbatim 8x dvd-r Datalife (the good stuff) and i burned at 8x, 4 movies so far, now i've had to sit through 4 movies i didnt want to watch just to see if it froze up.

none play on my 2002 dvd player JVC, nor my portable dvd player 8inch, but all play on livingroom Sony 5 disc player (that had major probs with ritek) only saw 1 glitch in each film for 1/2 a sec, so thats acceptable.

If you read all that thanks, my question is.. am i alone here?
how can g05s and philips suck so bad when g04 riteks were perfect in every dvd player i've ever tried (for 3 years now)??

last question, is it my comp? i know its slow for todays standards...

    1.47ghz amd
    512 pc133 ram
80 gig with around 20gig always free
    win xp

plz help im pullin my hair out, i hate to go back to g04's with 15min each burn but its the only way a burn is reliable.

and finally.. finally, what -r 8x or 16x (yeah right) are pretty much like g04's quality, compatability wise.

Any input would be very helpful.

  2. With 30 bad burns, i think you might want to look at something in your burning process or the DVD players you are using. It seems nothing is working for you. Maybe you need a new burner or computer if nothing is working at all.

The RitekG05 are working fine for me, not the best, but they all burn fine and play fine. Taiyo Yuden are the best, so you can try them. If it still don't work, buy a new computer/burner/DVD Player.

    Humm,

You can go take a look at www.cdrinfo.com, they have a review of your drive.
    Pretty bad I would add.

I would recommend to buy +R. More specifically, verbatim datalife plus 8x +R, MCC 003.

This drive does not seem to achieve good results with -R.

All new Sony DVD writers are manufactured by Lite-On. Lite-On based drives seem to prefer +R/RW media (at least in the reviews I have read). I would also check out www.cdfreaks.com and their forum http://club.cdfreaks.com. One thing I suggest is to try updating the firmware of your drive.
Some people say dog is mans best friend. I say that man is dog's best slave... At least that is what my dogs think.

I have the same drive and it prefers + media.
Havn't used that much -r in it but it seems as tho the -r needs to be used at 4x to get as good quality scans as +r at 8x.
It also doesn't like CMC MAG E01 at 8x but is OK at 4x.
of the -r media I've used the drive likes
    TDK TTG02 at 4x
    Verbatim MCC 02RG20 at 4x
    Taiyo Yuden TYG02 at 8x
Verbatim MCC 01Rg20 does OK but not as well as the above.
    The DRU710a really likes-
    RICOHJPN R01 and R02
    Yuden000T02 8x
    MCC 002
    Maxell 002

Doesn't like Retek R03 too well.

    Avoid ProdiscF01 at all costs.

Still using the TY02 firmwear the drive came with.
