DVP 642 37 Subtitle Problem

I apolgize in advance if this has been asked before but I did a search and read through quite a few threads but nothing resembling my problem


This problem has happened to me on numerous occasions so that's why I'm surprised it hasn't been brought up before



I have a movie with .srt subtitles that play fine on my computer but when transfered to DVD the .srt file shows up as a mpg file

I've even had a movie where cd1,cd2 and .srt files for both worked fine for my computer but only 1 of the .srt files showed up as a mpg file

No clue as to how to fix this problem.I thought maybe it was a burn problem or a dvd+r/dvd-r problem so I burnt it a few ways and nothing seems to fix this



Any help you guys can give me would be much apprerciated but I'm worried that I'm the only one having this problem

642 supports only "text" srt files not srt (vobsub)

try editing the srt file and when it is text file, it is ok (btw. file size should be approx max 80kb)

the "graphic" srt file will not work (size is much bigger than text srt) and in 642 menu this file seems to be mpeg2

suggestion: if you find the file to be graphic srt, try to find other subtitles in text format

What tool converts a graphic .srt into a txt .srt?

First try to see if the image sub file is your problem. A subtitle file (.sub, .srt) needs to be under 138Kb to work on the dvp642.

Now, if you have an image based subtitle file it will be big (probably bigger than 1 MB). If you have a text based subtitle file, it will usually be under 100 KB or a little over 100.

To modify your subtitle file you might use SubRip or Subtitle Workshop.

You might also want to search the internet for another subtitle file which is already text-based. This site has a lot of subtitle files click here
But again you might need to use SubRip or another program to sync your subtitle file with your film. You definitely want to check out if it syncs (is in time) with your video .avi file.

I don't think this is an issue here, but I have the ISO (data) settings for Nero burning software set for File Name Length set at "Level 2". I believe this allows for longer file names (up to 31 characters) even though the DVP642 menu won't display more than 10 characters.

I use SubRip, and if you convert a file to .srt you probably need to set the output format according to what format your film is in (PAL, NTSC) because they have different frame rates.

Generally speaking, .srt files are better because they go by time and not frames (like .sub files) and therefore it doesn't matter what format your film is in. It does however matter when you are converting to and from these types of files.

Therefore you should run your film through GSpot first. Not only will it tell you what framerate you have (25 = PAL, 23.96, or 29.970), but it will also tell you if you have QPEL, GMC, or non-square pixels [PAR - (Pixel Aspect Ratio) other than 1.0] in your film which then probably won't play in your dvp642.

So, take note of the framerate of your film and set your output settings for your subtitle software accordingly.

The .srt file I have in question is 56kb

If it's 56Kb then it's a normal .srt text file.

There is usually confusion between 2 types of .sub files. There is a kind they use on DVD's and they are image-based and huge. The other .sub file is small and based on frame rates (a given text subtitle is told to appear for a range of movie frames) as opposed to .srt which has the text to appear for a given amount of time in seconds and milliseconds.

The .srt file has a sequence of subtitles with an order number, followed by time frame, followed by text and a return space to separate each individual subtitle.

It is IMPORTANT that your .srt subtitle file starts with number "1" to play on the dvp642 though this is not necessary to play on your computer. Here is a short example of what an .srt file looks like (you can open it in notepad)

The means that normal subtitle support will put the words in bold font. means italic font. The slash tells it to end bold font. This is a nice feature, but currently the dvp642 does not support this code and if you have subtitle files like these, then the [b]'s and 's will appear on the screen and be annoying.

I tried to load your file in Subrip and it told me you had an error in line 631. I looked at this line and there was a line space above the subtitle. The following line, 632, had a weird code in front and after the subtitle. Here's where the problem was -

(I don't think line 632 caused a problem, however those symbols will show up if you leave them in.)

I edited those 2 lines and then used subrip's time correction to "Set minimal subtitle duration to one frame and repair overlapping".

The 2 lines in question now look like this

Notice that lines 631 and 632 are now 630 and 631 respectively. Subrip corrected something - probably it just renumbered the subtitles in order.

Also, looking at the original problem subtitle line 631. The subtitle lasts 7 seconds and it had that empty line above the subtitle. 7 seconds is a long time for such a short subtitle, and therefore there might have been another line that was meant to be there that got lost somehow.

In any case, I corrected the .srt file and I think it should play now.

Hello All,
Just a quick question I copied a movie from region 3 with using shrink and burned it with decrypter, I can clearly see the english sbtitles in my DVD burner, but when I play the movie in my dvd player the subtitles do not appear, i select subtitle from my remote control and from the movie menu and no dice. my dvd player (Yamakawa 238 ) is multiregion and region free. any advise??
