  1. I'm a bit puzzeled on how to crop the video...

Ripped using Smart Ripper and then fed into DVD2AVI.

In DVD2AVI, I chose Video --> Clip and Resize and got rid of all the black bars above and below the movie.

Then fed D2A and wav file into TMPGEnc. When the VCD was finished encoding, the black bars above and below were still there.

Is there something I need to do in TMPGEnc? And if so, how?

    Thanks.

dvd2avi do just crop the borders. It can not resize. This have to be done with TMPG.
You should use TMPG->setting->advanced->video arrange method->center (costom size) .But you need to calculate the ratio new. Let's say, your source is 720x576(PAL) 16:9 (1:2,35 widescreen), then you crop with dvd2avi (results 720x432). In TMPG set costom size to 720x320 and at the main video tab you set the output to 720x576 ,4:3.
TMPG adds the borders automaticly. This is just an example.
