Here's my situation...
I have the original DVD sitting at home, I want a backup for my car (portable DVD player), and a backup for my college dorm room.
A while ago, I made my backup for my car and recently I realized I'd like a backup for my dorm room. Seeing that I'm at college (and can't get the original to backup from), I figured I'd try to backup the backup. I tried several methods, but get rip speeds that are way to slow.
Things I have tried:
1) Use DVD Decrypter to copy the files to my HD (speed .1x)
2) Use DVd Decrypter to read ISO (speed .2x)
3) Use InterVideo DVD Copy (speed "unknown"... but its going at a crawl)
4) Copy files straight from DVD-R to HD (WindowsXP tells me its copying the files... and the time shoots up from 600 minutes to "unknown").
Any ideas why this is happening? I heard that DVD writers are not good for reading/ripping dvds... yet I usually get between 1-4x speeds when ripping my original dvds. Should I invest in a DVD-Rom drive soley for ripping/reading dvds?
NEC ND-2500A DVD-RW
WinXP Pro SP1, 3.2ghz, 1 gig ram.

Why not just rip the original to a HD folder using DVDShrink, then use a burning app to burn two backups?

That would be the ideal situation... but I can't do it. I'm at college and the original DVD is at home. That's why I'm attempting to do a backup of a backup.

As far as software goes, I have access to all of the free stuff (DVD Decrypter, etc...) because I can just download it (obviously).
I also have Nero, and InterVideo DVD Copy.
I'll try using Nero... let you guys know what happens...
EDIT: Nero is copying the image at 300kb/s... slow.-mojo-

Shouldn't make any difference wether its the original or the backup. I run backups through Shrink all the time. Sounds like you have something wrong with the computer.

Some burners are riplocked to between 2X and 4X. With firmware hacks they can be unlocked, or with a small amount of cash your can get a DVD-ROM, which should read faster by default but could also be riplocked. Again, a firmware hack can unlock its ripping speed too - My LiteOn 167T has been known to peak at between 15X and 15.5X whin ripping a DVD-R.
If in doubt, Google it. -
With ripping speeds that low I'd suggest either something else is running and hogging the box, or your disks are dirty. I use a 2500A with Herrie's 2510 firmware, and get rip speeds up to 11x on originals, and up to 7x+ on backups. Only dust, scratches or finger prints would cause mine to slow down like that.
Read my blog here.

its a newer backup though... i checked the disc, and no problems (scratches, prints, etc...)
Could it be the media? I'm using Ritek DVD-Rs
Side note... using DVDshrink to rip the disc, i was getting slightly better speeds, somewhere in the 1-2x range.
... hacked firmware? Can you hook me up (or link me)?-mojo-

Sorry to be a pain, but I'm having a little trouble tracking down the firmware you mentioned...
is it the herrie firmware for the 2500a, or did you just use the firmware from the 2510a drive?
Also, do i have to upgrade the firmware in steps? As in get the oldest firmware update... all the way up to the one i want to use?-mojo-

I used the firmware discussed in this thread. The links are at the top of the first post. http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=25904
I believe this is the last update from Herrie for this drive.Read my blog here.
