I asked a friend, while my DVD recorder was unavailable, to record a DVD-R of a documentary from a tv program. He did, by recording the 02h 05 minutes program on his Pionneer 520H's HD. Unfortunately, he does not record chapters, because he thinks there are jumps in the picture at the chapters points. I assured him that chapters do not cause jumps, to no avail.

He then copied the program from the HD to a DVD-R (at SP), after eliminating te extra 5 minutes at the end. The resulting disc shows 4 temporary - about 1/2 second picture freezes - during the 2 hour DVD, always at the same points.

Can anyone explain how to remedy this?

    Thanks,
    Yvon

Do the freezes appear when played from the hard drive? Was it copied to DVD in High-Speed mode? The only edit was at the end and not where the freezes occur, correct?

What brand of media was used?

    - Freezes don't show up when played from the HD.
    - The copy was made in High-Speed mode.
    - The only edit was at the end.
    - Memorex DVD-R was used.

    Thanks for answering.

I'd test with a different brand of media. Memorex is not too reliable. It could be media incompatibility. Everything else shouldn't be an issue unless there is a defect with the Pioneer's DVD burner itself.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

I found out that my friend uses a variable rate of compression: approximately 3 Mb/sec. to 7 Mb/sec.

The bitrate at the freezes is only approximately 3 Mb/sec. which is not enough compression to be rendered on the DVD players/recorders.

A DVD player should have no trouble with 3Mb/sec video. Have you tried this disc in other players or on a computer? Does the problem happen when played on the Pioneer that recorded it? I'd still do a test with a different brand of media. Yes, there could be some defect with the Pioneer DVR but one disc doesn't prove it.
