Dual Layer media is about $10 ... and about 50/50 shot it works in the end (coasters, compatibility, etc). Buying an extra discs is about the same price, and it comes with nifty cases, flawless ROM discs, etc.

Use DVD Decrypter in ISO read to rip a copy to your hard drive, then use it in ISO write mode to burn to blank DL DVD. This works great.

I noticed a few dvds are only DL because of the big load of ads they put on it. Use dvdshrink you can get rid of those & then you only need single layer.

So if I'm getting this right you all seem to be saying that there aren't many commercial DVDs that are dual-layer?
I did find a special at Meritline on 5-packs of Ridata +R DL ($30 for 5 plus 1 4X DVD+RW free) so I bought a couple. I'll try rr6966's method on a couple to see what happens (a couple of my daughters want copies of My Big Fat Greek Wedding which has full and wide versions on one disc).

With all due respect, I cannot agree with the "50%" assessment of odds. I made only one coaster (my first attempt), and have now had 17 successful burns. I call them "successful" as they ALL play on my two main players (a Panasonic RP56 and a Panasonic E55 recorder); they also play flawlessly on my Toshiba players in the bedroom, and my two Sony players, and my kids' Playstation, and the DVD player in my wife's mini-van. All 17 discs. They also survive the layer change with no issues. (and, of course, they play on my Lite-On DVD-Rom in my PC, and on my Pioneer external dual layer burner on my PC). All seventeen burns. And, they all play the layer change with no problems or issues.
Only one person truly tried to answer this guy's question. Every other response seemed more intent on convincing the original author not to bother to try.
My response:
Understanding the potential issues, I recommend making absolutely certain you have the latest version of DVDDecrypter (this is essential).
I would recommend Verbatim blank dual layer discs (the Riteks have not proven as successful, so far).
Then, follow the DVDDecrypter guide for dual layer burning -- Make certain you select "ISO mode" for a complete read, to get an image onto your hard drive. Do not change any default settings in Decrypter.
===
Remove all discs from drives.
Open DVD Decrypter (make certain it is the most recent version).
From the 'Mode' menu, select 'ISO' -> 'Read'.
Put the commercial DVD-9 disc which you own in the drive.
Take note of the 'Destination' file name.
Click the big 'Decrypt' button.
Take the DVD-9 disc out of the drive.
From the 'Mode' menu, select 'ISO' -> 'Write'.
Put a blank double layer disc in your DVD Writer.
Click the little folder icon - 'Browse for source file' - and select the MDS file created for you as part of the steps above.
Click the big 'Write' button.
Finished.
=========
To the original author of this thread: There are many, many issues when one begins to try to edit, or compile, or author, or re-author. As soon as one must try to determine where and when to place a layer change, the potential for a coaster increases dramatically. However, for a straight "rip" and a straight "burn," I believe the above method is not at all risky.
Hope this helps,

The problem is that your experiences are indicative of... well... you.
Here's the scoop.
There was a time when you couldn't be guaranteed of getting a good CD burn. Back in the day. Nowadays, it's a no-brainer. Unless you buy the "we pay you to take them away" media, you're pretty much assured that you just put it in, and it burns ok, and plays in just about everything.
Then you have DVD+R or DVD-R. A modern PC, with the right software installed, and a half-decent burner, can be assumed to make reasonable burns of whatever you like onto decent-quality media. There are a lot of "reasonable"s and "decent"s in that last sentence. Judging by the number of people in here who can't get ANY DVD media to burn properly (usually it's a media problem but just as often as not it's their PC), the "success rate" for DVD burns is much less than for CD burns. I'd say the average person, bringing home the average media, using the average burning program... it's probably 75% success. After a little tinkering and question-asking, closer to 90%. Still far from 100% - there are people who just can't get their DVD's to burn no matter WHAT.
Now let's take Dual-Layer DVD. Even SEASONED members in here, who know EXACTLY what they're doing, make coasters with dual-layer media. That's pretty bad. That means the general public's numbers are going to be... wait for it... around 50% with these discs.
Add to that the MYRIAD of things that can go wrong - virtually EVERY burning program seems to have issues with the layer break, far less players are compatible with the DL+R media than with +R or -R, etc. Now you have a recipe for disaster.
I agree that MOST of us OUGHT to be able to get dual-layer working properly. But it just ain't so. And every coaster is $10 down the toilet. That's a pricey hobby.
I'm not saying we shouldn't promote it, or expect it to get better. After all, the first 5 CD's I burned... 2 of them were bad, and they cost $5 each way back in the day. So there's no reason NOT to expect that it'll get better. But right now, today - I'd say stay away unless you're dedicated and already know what you're doing with regular DVD's. In other words, if you have to ask for help in this forum... you probably aren't cut out for DL just yet.

On Nero there's a drop-down thing to indicate whether the disk is single or dual layer.....

On a related note, I love when someone asks a question about something and people respond by telling them their opinions rather than attempting to answer the question. Had the question been "Why do you think I should forget about dual layer burning?" the responses would have been appropiate.
However, that was not the question, was it?I don't have a bad attitude...

If that is his stat, than that is his stat. Unless you were watching him burn them, I don't see how you can dispute it. If someone does one DL burn, and it works in every player they own or test in, then that persons stat is 100%.
Unless people who are willing to take the chance on burning DL and post results are allowed to voice their opinions, things will never get better. I have to agree, will all the people quoting low stats either posts their specific test results, or quit with the unfounded negative comments. I really don't care to hear your dubious publication test results regurgitated. I want to hear real life results.
Thanks.

As a person interested in this topic, I would hate to see it get locked because people resort to lowering themselves to the level of others who are not directly contributing.
If there is only one person issuing insults, I have no doubt a mod would deal with that individual. If we start responding in kind to that individual, I have no doubt the entire thread will suffer.
