    msconfig doesnt catch everything.

try this. press ctrl+alt+delete, it will bring up the 'windows task manager', click on the 'processes' button, then click 'user name', it will organize everything by 'system', 'local service', 'network service' & your user name.

high light every processes for your user name except 'explorer.exe' & 'taskmgr.exe', and end the process. if you have anti-virus software, it may not allow you to end the process. once you've done that try installing the service pack.

if that doesnt work, try booting your computer in to safe mode & installing the service pack. just restart your computer, and tap the F8 button about once every second, it will bring up a selection screen. it should load windows minimally & allow you to install the service pack.

Type SERVICES.MSC into the run box and then STOP the services you want shutting down...MSCONFIG is not the same...but you wont find atapi there... imapi maybe...

As for the atapi.sys problem do a search for the file (it should be in Windows/System 32/Drivers) and DELETE it then install SP1 (dont worry its a sys file so it will resead itself at boot).

  6. There's a useful program called "wholockme" that tells you which process is using a file when it's "locked" and it'll even close it from within the app.
