  1. I know there's a program that will convert from type one to type two, but is there a program that can convert back to type 1? I only ask this because my video editing software is refusing to take type 2 for some reason. thanx.

Check the Canopus DV File Converter. I think it will do a 2->1 conversion (Don't have access to my edit suite right now, so I can't say for sure).

  3. Why in the world would you ever want to convert back to Type 1? Type 2 is so much more convenient to work with. You see all those little programs designed to do Type 1 > Type 2? Well, why do you think they are that way and not Type 2 > Type 1? Stick with Type 2, don't make your life that much harder.

Maybe because his software doesn't support Type-2.... Most of the converters are there because Virtualdub only supports type-2. Most major editing programs support either or are compatible with type-1.

BTW The Canopus DV converter does support conversion to type-1.

  5. If your software doesn't support Type 2 DV, then you need different software!

  6. If you have installed a DV codec (try the Panasonic DV codec), type 2 avi should work with any program. The only difference between type 2 and type 1 is that type 2 extracts the audio from the DV stream to store it separately.

Incidentally, Virtualdub experimental 1.6.2 now reads type 1 DV avi files.

  7. DVdate (look in the tools section of this website) does the job to convert from type 2 to type 1 as well as the contrary.

I just transfer DV from jvc miniDV camera. The resulting AVI is only 1 file, this means my DV is type 1? If yes how to make type 2 DV from my camcorder?

  9. No both types have only one file. You can use WinDV or DVIO to capture in type 2 (or type 1) DV avi.

This link explains the Type1/Type2 issue.

It affects how audio is multiplxed. Commercial software usually uses Type2.

  11. Most software will also accept type 1 DV avi. Vdub experimental 1.6.3
also accepts type 1. I usually capture in type 1.
