  1. Hey everyone. I am at a loss with this one. The only thing I can think of is that it might be a firewall with ports blocked or something.

The case is......my buddies work(front desk at a hotel) just got new computers and to pass the time he would like to install msn messenger, party poker......or even play some internet games installed with windows.

Well the problem is.....he can't sign into msn messenger, party poker won't connect, and the internet games like internet hearts, internet checkers...stuff like that won't connect either.

However, he can surf the internet and check his email(hotmail) just fine.

    He is using windows 2000.

Is this a firewall issue? The built in firewall isn't checked so that isn't being used......he didnt see anything that said zone alarm or firewall......just norton anti-virus....not sure if that has built in firewall capabilities or not.

Also he did a port scan on a site and it said all of the ports were blocked and that he was in stealth mode or something.....gave his tcp/ip address and I was able to ping it. I ran the same tests and it said my ports were closed.....not blocked like his.

Any help you could give me would be great.......just feel bad for the poor guy when he is sitting there by himself at 3am with nothing to do.

    Thanks

    Hatz

"FRIEND", huh ? Yup, he's Firewalled. Not at the PC, but at the router connecting to the DSL line.

Getting around it? Quite possible, but it will take some technical knowledge and some software to send MSN data through port 80 (http).

  3. Def. a friend. I would know if he was firewalled or not if i was there....the only thing is, he is about 3 hours away so I tried doing it over the phone.

Plus I just got done playing a quick game of party poker......lost

So he is blocked at the router..........so he would need to forward those ports that those programs use?? Or is there a way to change the port for msn messenger to port 80?

Probably not a way for him to change partypokers ports....but who knows.

Told him to go ahead and type 192.168.1.1 into his browswer but nothing popped up for him......probably not using a linksys then.......he says all the new computers are dells and that there is a server box that he can see.

Then again, he didnt even know which wire was the ethernet wire going into the back of his computer tower......so this might be a lost cause for him.

    Thanks for the help.

I recall AOL Instant Messenger had a web front end on their site, if that helps. The guy would have to go through a Socks 5 Proxy Server to get MSN and other stuff out. If he isn't a techie, don't bother.

  6. Hehehe...I was afraid it would be over his head. He def. isnt a techie. Like I said....didnt know where the ethernet cable was. I will just let him know that he is screwed and should probably not worry about it. Looks like he will just have to do all his instant messeging through email.

Thanks again for all the help. I appreciate it.

    Hey Hatz,

MSN Messenger has a web version of their software. You don't have to install it on the computer. You just run it through the browser. I haven't used it so I don't know how it works. I just know that it is available. Go to www.webmessenger.com

    Edit: oops www.webmessenger.msn.com

  8. Thanks for the link.....I appreciate it. I will let him know tonight when he has to work again.

We figured out he is behind a proxy and after switching the messenger to http proxy under the connection tab and typing in the address and port number that matches up with the settings in internet explorer.......it still didnt work.....Might be a lost cause but the web version might be better.

    Thanks again.

That's kinda cool. Didn't know they had that. I also didn't realize that you could sign in as 'appear offline' now. I'm so behind the times.
