I just tried backing up a DVD using DVDShrink, but it came up with that I had to use DVD+RW or DVD+R not the DVD-R I had, was this something DVD Shrink couldn't do, Nero 6 that I was using or in fact my DVD burner?

What program and what kind of burner do you then recommend for DVD-R and is burning on DVD-R even a preferred choice over DVD+RW or DVD+R?

    Thanks

Please fill in your computer profile so we know what burner you're using.

... and BTW, it's not DVDShrink doing this
    If in doubt, Google it.

I was using TDK DVD-R and my burner came with the HP computer I bought a year ago. Not sure exactly what kind of burner it is. It says DVD writer/CD writer combo.

    Also if you could answer
is burning on DVD-R even a preferred choice over DVD+RW or DVD+R?

All DVD writers can burn CDs. They were made that way for commercial reasons (can you imagine how annoyed Ma and Pa Kettle types would be if you had to keep a separate CD burner?).

Without knowing what burner you have, it is impossible to say why you're having trouble using the -R disc. It could be that you're using a burner that only supports +R. It could just be that your programs are set up awkwardly. For my money, I would ditch the idea of burning in Nero (I cannot express enough how irritating I find that program) and make an ISO image to burn using DVDDecrypter instead.

Your drive may be +R only. We can help if you give us the make and model. Double click my computer, right click on the DVD drive, select properties, then click the hardware tab. The make and model should be next to the dvd/cd-r device type.

Some people prefer -R over +R, they are equal in quality but -R may be more wdely acceptable in DVD players. If it's your only option however, then you may not have a choice.

I honestly have less performance issues with +R, but my setup might have something to do with that. Nonetheless, I am venomously against the DVD Consortium for a number of reasons, so I will never use -R unless I am giving someone a disc and I know they cannot play +R for whatever reason.

If I burn an iso image will it have all of the menu options as well?
Menus were the reason I just burned using Nero from DVDShrink

I have a HP DVDwriter 300c & a Samsung DVD-Rom SD-616E separately. If possible, could you let me know if this writer could do DVD+R and DVD-R? Or is is just DVD+RW?

Thank you for those who commented on DVD differences.

I looked up the database. There are three matches that are almost, but not quite, the model you stated. All three of which only burn to DVD+R and DVD+RW.
