  1. Hi

I have a pretty big issue that has ruined my dvd usage. I have a DVD ROM make Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R6012. I use WIN XP Home SP1. Off the past month or so I've realised that my burnt data DVD's are not being recognized by my DVD ROM. While it still recognizes some Movie DVD's and all the burnt CD's, my data and a few DVD's are not being recognized at all. It says empty disc, but that is not true.

I was successfully able to use my friends DVD ROM to run all my burnt DVD's, and even previously I was able to read these DVD's so I don't see what the problem. Again, with the movie DVD's, they are read alright in my friends laptop, but not mine. I don't know what the problem is. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall my drivers and nothings worked.

If anyone can take sometime out and suggest me on what I could do, I'll be very grateful.

    Thank you.

Sounds like your drive is on it's last legs, but hopefully I am wrong and someone will have a solution for you.

One question does it say the disc is empty or the Drive is empty when you put the disc in.

Do you have DVD Info Pro? or DVD Decrypter. You can gather more info about your drive and the discs using these programs and both are free.

DVD Info Pro will give you more info. You can also do some diagnostics on your drive with it too.

If it is, that's probably one of the cheaper things you could have to replace on a computer. You can get a new one for around $20 if you watch sales. I just looked at newegg.com and they have several (not even on sale) for under $30.

  6. I downloaded DVDInfoPro and I was trying to find the info, but it says Drive did not Report Ready - which I believe means that its not reading the disc. But thats where the problem originates, how come its reading ok in other drives? Also if there is a problem with my drive, how come it can read the Cd's and other DVD movies fine?

    Thanks

None of my DVD readers or writers have crapped out on me. Knock on wood. But I know people whose Playstation2's have died.

Usually the First thing to go is Ability to read DVDR then it has a hard time with DVD movies then it stops reading DVD movies. then it have a hard time with DVD games then stops reading DVD games then has hard time with CD games then it reads nothing and makes any attractive paper weight for Sony fans.

Drive that read both DVD's and CD's either have two lasers or the laser changes focus. The focus changing type is more common I think.

Some people might suggest opening up the drive and cleaning the laser lens. But personally I don't think I could do this as they are quite delicate I think.

If the drive is reporting as not ready most likely it is the drive.

Have you tried switching the drives between the two computers?

Do you use the drive that is giving you problems more than the one that is working right?

  8. I experienced the same problem before, Toshiba 2410-S205 laptop dvd-rom drive not reading movies burnt on DVD-R media. I found out that laptop's Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2212 only plays movies made with DVD+R media.
