I was wondering if anyone knows of a free 128 Kbps audio recorder for recording "What U Hear" that will do both MP3s and Wavs? I found one called Freecorder but it only does 64 Kbps and MP3s, and 64Kbps wouldn't be the best quality for music. I was wanting wavs also because I'm under the impression that there are more utilities available for editing wav files ... but I could be wrong. I'm trying to steer a student for educational purposes. I have Wavelab Light from Steinberg for myself ... but was wanting something simpler for instruction.

    Hello,

Well LAMEMP3 will go up to 324 or so. The codec works with VIRTUALDUB and other programs so I imagine it would be useable in standard audio rippers

Theres also other free audio rippers in the TOOLS section found on the left of the screen <------

As you mention "What U Hear" I assume you have a Creative soundcard as that is a term they use. If this is the case, the Creative Sound Recorder will allow you to save as PCM (.wav) in 44,100 kHz 16 bit Stereo (which works out at 172 kb/sec) and 48,000 kHz 16 bit stereo (which comes out at 187 kb/sec). This comes with the bundled Creative software that comes with the card. Come to that, Windows Sound Recorder will do exactly the same but I'm not sure if it can do What U Hear or only one input.

Once you have them as .wav files you can degrade them to whatever MP3 sample rate you like.
