  1. I'm using Ritek 4x media (and other times 8x) and want to burn at 4x. It lets me set the speed to 4x, but it will burn only at 2x, jumping back and forth from 1x to 2x.

This is using my external Sony DRX530ULX dvd burner. I try the burner on my new dell desktop and it burns my dvd's at 4x. I also used a brand new plextor dvd burner on the HP desktop and it also burns DVD's at 2x.

Why is it that only with this computer I cannot burn higher than 2x? Any suggestions?

    Thank you.

Your burner is probably in PIO mode instead of one of the DMA modes.

Windows does this when your drive is stuck in an error for too long. It sucks that Microsoft does this.

To switch is back to a DMA mode you will have to go to the Device Manager.

But once you get to the device manager the next steps varies by what motherboard you have.

My motherboard lets you force IDE(ATA) drives into DMA modes, but some only let you select DMA if available.

If yours it the later type(won't let lyou force it back into DMA) then it gets tricky.

With this type I have had to unistall my IDE controller drivers and reinstall them, but this can be tricky if you don't know what you are doing.

    More info might help.

    Scratch that last reply.

That was for an IDE drive.

Are you using Firewire(IEEE 1394) or USB?

You may need to look for a firmware update.

  6. I am using Firewire. But it's not the drive because it burns at 4x just fine on my other computer. I would think it's my HP desktop that is not letting it burn any higher.

Please give me some more suggestions. I've done a firmware update and it still won't burn at 4x.

    The media?

I remember a few monthes back. My lite on 451 would only burn TDK DVD-R 4x's @ 2x's.

for some reason would read read the right descriptor(can't spell) codes.

I couldn't fix the problem just used a different burner.
    snappy phrase

    I don't know what you're talking about.

If you choose to go the firmware route, improperly flashing the drive can ruin it.

I suggest you do nothing else when updating the firmware.
