No matter what program I use (PowerDVD 6, Windows Media Player 10, Real Player), my vcds and svcds skip a lot. CPU usage is almost none. Mem usage is very low. Nero drive speed tells me that my drive is reading at a fine speed (at least 40x). Also, after it reaches the end of a chapter, it takes a long time to read the next one. And much longer to start playing than a DVD. Haven't had this problem before, however I have had a problem before with DVDs taking a long time to be recognized, but that has stopped (I think it was a software issue). Thanks for any help.

I have had some similar issues; I am convinced that Power DVD does not like VCDs or MPEG1 films @ 1150kps. XVCDs seem okay however.
Here is an example of a deditcated VCD player software such as Lalim VCD Player which you might find useful:

This particular software doesn't play SVCDs however. A Google search may help out.
Hope that this helps.Cole -
Ok, i fixed it, sorta. I tried changed drive mode from DMA to PIO. That helped a lot. But the sound would cut out every couple of seconds for just a moment. And so I tried using my old DVD Rom. It started working. Turns out this cheap cyberhome dx162d was the problem. It worked fine the first few days, but then stopped, so I didn't think it was the actual drive. But yea, thanks for the reply anyways Cole.
