Maxell RITEKG04 DVD-R

I purchased two spindles of 25 Maxell RITEKG04 DVD-Rs. Periodically these discs give my Pioneer A05 power calibration errors (Nero 6.6.0.1).

Sometimes if I try a 2nd attempt to burn the same Maxell disc it will burn other times only if I decrease my writing speed to 2x.

However Msonic DVD-R and Memorex DVD-R all burn fine at 4x.

Anyone else have this problem with Maxell RitekG04 media ? I've never had this problem before with any Maxell media.

This is why everyone says when buying Maxell DVD-R media make sure the package says MADE IN JAPAN.

The one you got said MADE IN TAIWAN and is less-than-steller quality as you are finding out.

Yes. RITEKG04 = crap at least 10-20% of the time. Unreliable media these days.

MADE IN JAPAN is the good stuff: TYG01, TYG02, MXLRG02, MXLRG03

I always thought maxell was good. First time I've ever had problems with them.

My Memorex (CMC) discs are more consistent on my Pioneer A05. My LG 4120B writer burns just about anything. Even these Maxells.

Maxell is just a brand name.

MXL is the Maxell media. These are one of the 3 best media even made (along with PVC, TY).

Maxell DVD-R discs are very good but this only applies to the DVD-R packs that say MADE IN JAPAN.

How do the Ritek G05's compare ? Are they better or worse ? Some of the local computer vendors are selling them.

However Staples here sells Msonic which appear to be MCC.

Any DVD-R that is made anywhere otherthan JAPAN is worthless shit.

So what DVD-R media is made in Japan?

That's about it and that is what you need to buy.

You can buy Taiyo Yuden on-line for dirt cheap at RIMA.COM

You can also buy Taiyo Yuden under the FUJI brand name but only the FUJI DVD-R packs that say MADE IN JAPAN are Taiyo Yuden. If it says MADE IN TAIWAN etc. then stay away.

Maxell DVD-R media is the same.

All other DVD-R media is to be avoided.

You will save yourself a lot of headaches if you stick to this rule.

My understanding is that Pioneer no longer makes media and if they do then the price will be too high to even consider it.

TDK used to make their own DVD-R discs but now they don't. They are not an option.

MCC can be OK but it is not EXCELLENT.

I think LordSmurf will agree with me that when it comes to DVD-R you need to stick to Taiyo Yuden or Maxell if you want the cream of the crop.

Made in CMC plant, but not with CMC materials.
Fine.

lordsmurf, next time you're in a Staples, CompUSA or Best Buy check out the Sony 8x DVD-R spindles. They're made in Japan, but they aren't TY media, they are SONY08D1. I have a 25 disc spindle here as we speak. They're great discs.

I just bought a couple of 8x Sony 50 packs from CompUsa that said "Made In Japan" on the outside. It shows Sony's media id when using DVD Decrypter.

Easy dude. No point in getting a lot of hackles up with an extreme position. I, for one, would beg to disagree with you. Very little of the -R I burn on my NEC is Japanese and all of it has scans within a few PI errors of TY. If you were speaking of +R I might agree a little more.

I have a 50 pack of the 8x DVD-R I bought from Best Buy for $17.99 a week ago I'm currently using. Made In Japan. Media Code SONY08D1. My Pioneer DVR-108 claims to burn them at 16x, but I haven't tried.

Do you use Simulation or just Write when burning with Nero?

On Nero's Burn Tab, make sure Silmulation isn't checked off under Action - leave that box blank and only have a check mark for Write.

I have a hunch that may be what is causing your problem.

Could also be stuff running in the background - make sure your screensavers are disabled during Writing process.

It is rumored that Sony has no DVD-R production facilities in Japan and that Taiyo Yuden makes these discs for them (kind of like CMC and Prodisc making MCC's discs for them) but this hasn't been confirmed. Taiyo Yuden and Sony do have a collaboration called Start Labs, which deals with TY's optical media production.

My experience with RITEKG04 printable media has been great. I verify 95% of my burns and I have never had an error in literally thousands of burns.

I prefer Maxell as they play the best in my Pioneer DV333 and two Norcent DP300 players.

It's only my Pioneer A05 that is having problems with these Maxell Ritek04 discs. My LG4120b and LG4160b burn them fine.

My Pioneer is burning my Maxell DvD-R x8, MMC Msonic DVD-R x4 and Memorex CMC DVD-R x4 fine. No power calibration errors with these media. But stick in Maxell RitekG04 and it's a crap shoot. Although my Pioneer will burn 'em just fine at x2.

The Staples that I was at the other day has a bin with 50pk spindles of Sony 8x DVD-R Made in Japan temporarily marked down to ~ $20.
I was doing a search in this forum to find some information about these Sony's.
Right now this week there is also the sale at Best Buy on the Fuji 50pk spindle 8x DVD-R Made in Japan for $20.
In this thread people were talking about these Sony's and saying that the media code is showing up as Sonyxxxx instead of TYxxx, but someone said that, be that as it may, they're likely just TY's.
1) I'm sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but the first thing I was wondering about is that are TY DVD-R's bearing one brand name going to be identical to TY DVD-R's bearing another brand name ?

2) Since it sounds like it's still a little bit up in the air as to whether these Sony's bearing the Sony media id are or are not TY's and since the Fuji are on sale this week at BB, would there be any reason to try these Sony's out ?

Yes. Taiyo Yuden is Taiyo Yuden but there have been some reports of fake Taiyo Yuden but I think that was happening mostly in the UK as I recall. If you buy them direct from [url=http://www.rima.com/]RIMA.COM[/ul] then they will be genuine as will be the FUJI packs that say MADE IN JAPAN.

Well the SONY discs are still a bit of a question mark so if you can get the FUJI 50-pack for the same price then do it. Just make sure it says MADE IN JAPAN. I was at a BEST BUY this past Monday (2 days ago) because of the sell. Out of about 10 50-packs only 2 of the 50-packs were MADE IN JAPAN aka Taiyo Yuden. The other 50-packs were MADE IN TAIWAN.

I'm trying to read up on all this and ask the right questions so I can get things right as much as possible to start with -- esp. since there's a lot of stuff in my family's videotape collection that we want to transfer to DVD, and it'd be pretty frustrating to lose the contents of an entire DVD because I didn't do enough homework in picking the right one.
