    Are there any freeware or otherwise ools out there to combine a stilll image and an audio clip into an avi clip?

    Pretty much any video editor will do that.

    Check out the free ones in the "Tools" -> "Advanced Video Editors" category...

    I don't know any of these (in no particular order), but they sound OK:

    Avid Free DV
    Zwei-stein
    Wax 2
    AviTricks
