  1. i was going to buy a canopus advc 50 because i'm having trouble keeping audio synch when capturing long clips (several hours) from tv. advc has audio lock. but i'm also getting a new camcorder at tax refund time. one with analog passthrough. will i be able to capture tv from svideo this way? will i get synch problems if i capture for say like 8 hours? i i recorded 8 hours of discovery times channel using gainward fx5600 ultra and only had synch problems after 2-3 hours. will passthrough on a regular basis for several hours be bad for the camcorder in anyway? thanks for anyones input.

I have a Sony DV-D8 Camcorder as a passthrough device and it works excellent, probably even better than the Canopus (which is still a good device) because my DV-Camera it stabilizes the passthrough (VHS) video signal too.
I use it mainly to record from my VCR (Tuner) and I have NEVER had a single audio issue with it. Even when switching through the channels while recording everything keeps in sync.

For long captures with your old card you can try AVI_io. It's the only capture tool for me which keeps everything in sync, even after hours of captures.

  3. thank you very much for the response. i might end up trying with camcorder to see results. camcorder is a definite purchase, but the advc will be kept in mind. i'm just hoping that i won't get stretched video (synch problems) with extended captures in passthrough. if i do, i guess i'll just get the advc as well. the only reason i'm hesitant on the advc is because i'll be switching to digital tv and broadcast next year and will not be needing a $200 analog capture device. but if it gets me a year of good tv captures, i guess it would still be worth it. hoping to hear from someone who has captured in passthrough for several hours.

I captured with my my DV-Passthrough for hours (4+) without ever having a problem. I use the Scenalyzer LIVE to capture in nice segments, but other free tools wil ofcourse also work fine.
If buying a DV-Camera with passthrough there's is no real need for that Canopus box.

that's what i realized when i started researching cams for myself. thanks for the reply. i'm leaning towards the panasonic (eewww) pvgs200 with 3 ccd. scares me to buy pana though. hooked on sony. but sony's cheapest 3ccd is a little more. might save up and go sony. all about the money. thanks again for the replies.
