I tried to search ,but really didn't find an answer.
I have pioneer ao4. Can the burn speed be updated or would I have to buy a new burner?

You can sometimes bump up the speed for certain media by upgrading the firmware. Check the Pioneer suppport srea for that.
But there is no magic bullet that makes an older 2X burner work at 8X, for example. The higher speed burners have higher power lasers and better mechanical parts to provide the higher rotational speed. You'll need a new burner. -
Check out cdfreaks to see if there is a hacked firmware for this burner. Mine went from 4x SL to 8x DL with just a firmware upgrade.

You won't get it to burn faster than 2x take it from me it was my first writer.

Thanks all,
I'll just deal with the 2x, I'm not pressed for time, just figured if it could I would.
Should I look to upgrade the firmware anyway? -
Yes that will give you your best chance of burning high speed media. Another option is the 2xALL hack that was released that should ignore the media codes and burn at x2 rather than 1x which is the default speed if it doesn't recognise the media
